Bison Baseball Drops Series Finale to Washington & Jefferson

May 2 – WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Bethany College baseball team dropped the final game of a regular-season series with Washington & Jefferson College on Monday evening. The Green & White fell to the Presidents by a 9-2 decision.

The host Presidents came out of the gates strong, jumping out to a 6-0 lead, posting three runs in both the second and fourth innings.

Sophomore Ryan Nickerson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach) scored the first of his two runs in the top of the fifth inning. He led off the inning with a single and was moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Martin (Sound Beach, N.Y./Sound Beach). After going to third on a single by Zack Miller (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin), Nickerson scored on a groundout by centerfielder Jon Lee (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) cutting the W&J lead to 6-1.

Nickerson once again set the table in the top of the seventh inning. Leading off the inning for the second time in the game, Nickerson tripled to right-center field. He was then brought home on a goundout by Miller, cutting the lead to 8-2.

Washington & Jefferson would tack on another run in the home half of the seventh, rounding out the scoring at 9-2.

Offensively, Nickerson led the way, tallying a pair of hits, including a triple, while scoring the only runs of the game for the Green & White. Miller and Lee each tallied a hit and a RBI, while Kevin Marthinsen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair), Neil Woods (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny), Adam Becker (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) and Ryan Bisi (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) accounted for the remaining hits.

The Bison will conclude the 2016 season with one final conference series against the Tomcats of Thiel College. The Green & White and Thiel will play a nine-inning game on Friday at Bethany Field, before the Bison travel to Greenville, Pa. for a doubleheader on Saturday.
