Baseball Drops a Pair at Westminster
April 23 – NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Bethany College baseball team dropped both games of a conference doubleheader on the road on Saturday afternoon. The Bison fell twice to Westminster College, dropping game one, 2-1, before falling, 10-5, in the second game.
In the opening game of what will be a three-game, weekend, series, the Bison found themselves in a pitchers' dual. Bison senior Ryan Bisi (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) continued his hot streak, posting a complete-game in the 2-1 loss.
The senior's lone blemish on an otherwise solid start was the first inning, as Bisi allowed two runs on three hits, giving the Titans a 2-0 advantage. Unfortunately, that would be enough for the hosts, who kept the Green & White to just five hits and one run in the game.
Bethany's offense was totaled in the top of the third inning. John Lee (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) opened the frame with a single and was moved to second on a groundout by Andrew Gilliland (Gahanna, Ohio/Bishop Hartley). The following batter was Kevin Marthinsen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair), who came through with a RBI single to cut the Titan lead to 2-1.
Neither team could muster any offense through the next four innings as the two sides managed just four hits, combined.
After his first inning of work in which he allowed the two runs, Bisi, scattered four singles through his next five innings of work, allowing just the two runs on seven hits. The complete game marked the senior's team-leading third of the season.
Offensively in game one, Marthinsen led the way, tallying a pair of hits and the team's lone RBI in the outing.
In game two, the Bison bats came alive early as the Green & White sent ten batters to the plate in the top of the first inning. Bethany tallied five runs on five hits in the frame, including a two-RBI double by Zack Miller (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin) and RBI singles from both Marthinsen and Zach Schlotter (Twinsburg, Ohio/Gilmour Academy).
It was from there, however, that the Titans rallied to score 10-unanswered runs over the next six innings. Westminster hung two in the first, one in the second, five in the fifth and two more in the sixth inning.
The momentum swing came in the fifth inning as the hosts took the lead for good on a three-run home run.
Offensively in game two, Miller tallied a pair of hits and two RBIs, while Lee reached base twice. Marthinsen added his second RBI of the doubleheader and finished 1-for-4 at the dish.
The Bison and Titans will conclude their three-game set on Sunday, April 24, at Bethany Field. First pitch at Bethany is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
