Baseball Drops Non-Conference Tilt to Muskingum

March 29 – BETHANY, W. Va. - The Bethany College baseball team dropped a 5-1 non-conference decision to Muskingum University on Tuesday afternoon.

The Muskies did most of their damage in the top of the second inning, getting to starting pitcher Cody Gross (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin) with three runs in the frame.

Freshman Neil Woods (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) came on in relief with two out and two on in the top of the fourth inning.

The freshman was solid in his second relief appearance, pitching 4.1 innings of scoreless baseball while allowing just one hit, taking the Bison into the bottom of the eighth with the Muskies holding on to a 3-0 lead.

The Green & White broke into the scoring column in the bottom of the frame, getting a two-out solo home run from junior Adam Becker (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township). Becker's first-career homer cut the Muskie lead to 3-1.

Muskingum responded in the top of the ninth inning, striking for two runs in the frame. The pair of runs would extend the deficit to 5-1, with the Bison falling by the same tally.

Offensively, Becker led the way for the Bison, posting the lone RBI for the Green & White. The remaining hits from Bethany came from junior Zach Schlotter (Twinsburg, Ohio/Gilmour Academy), and freshmen Kelaen Welch (Follansbee, W. Va./Brooke) and Kevin Marthinsen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair).

For Muskingum, Patrick McGinty got the start on the mound and pitched a complete game, scattering four hits and one earned run, while not retiring a single out via strikeout.

Bethany will be back in action on Saturday, April 2 as they open a three - game series with conference foe Saint Vincent College. The doubleheader in Latrobe is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
