Men's basketball defeated by Lancaster Bible, 83-69

LANCASTER, Pa. (Nov. 18) - The Bethany College men's basketball team was knocked off 83-69 by Lancaster Bible in the consolation game of the William Marshall Tournament hosted by Franklin & Marshall Saturday evening.

The Bison (0-3) were led by senior guard Calique Jones (Pittsburgh, Pa./Obama Academy), who posted 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting (75 percent). The Pittsburgh native scored his 1,000th career-point with a layup at the 6:15-mark of the second half to become the 26th-member of the Bethany College 1,000-point club.

Senior center Liam Davis (Orlando, Fla./Orlando Christian) added 14 points and nine rebounds in the loss and was named to the all-tournament team following the event. Freshman guard Trey Shifflett (York, Pa./William Penn) also recorded double-digit points with 11 off of the bench.

Neither team created much separation in the early stages of the game, as Bethany held on to a narrow 12-11 lead with 14:03 left in the first half. The game was tied at 18-18 at the 10-minute mark when Lancaster Bible (2-1) mounted a 13-2 run over the next three minutes to race out to a 31-20 advantage, eventually leading 42-30 entering halftime.

Lancaster Bible continued to build its lead in the second half, leading by as many as 19 at one point, but the Bison managed to close the gap. Bethany trailed 58-41 with 12:41 remaining in the game, before out-scoring the Chargers 24-14 over the next nine minutes to pull within seven points at 72-65 with 3:41 left in regulation. Unfortunately, the Bison were unable to get any closer, allowing Lancaster Bible to earn the win.

Neither team found any rhythm from long range. Bethany ended the evening 3-of-25 (12 percent) from beyond-the-arc, while the Chargers were a mere 1-of-13 (seven percent) from three-point land.

Lancaster Bible went 20-of-34 from the free-throw line (58 percent), compared to the Bison who only visited the charity stripe 12 times, converting eight times (66 percent).

Bethany will continue non-conference play on Tuesday, November 21 when they head to Pittsburgh to take on Carnegie Mellon at 6 p.m.
