Hamrick's Buzzer Beater Lifts Bison Past Wasps

Newport News, Va. – The Bethany College men's basketball team traveled Newport News, Va. for the Captains Shootout, hosted by the Christopher Newport University Captains. The Bison faced Emory & Henry Wasps in the consolation game Sunday afternoon. Dalton Hamrick's three at the buzzer lifted the Bison over the Wasps, 75-72. Hamrick finished with 13 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Neshawn Brown finished with a career high 24 points to lead the Bison.

GAME OVERVIEW

Bethany lifted the lip with a Hamrick jumper. The Green and White pulled ahead after the Wasps knotted the game at 2-2. The Bison scored the next 11 points to lead 13-3 with 15:26 to go in the first half. The Green and White maintained a commanding lead throughout the first ten minutes of the half, but the Wasps kept swarming the Bison to battle back and cut the Bison lead to 36-33 with under four minutes to go before the break. Despite the Wasps coming back, the Green and White held onto a 41-36 lead going into the break.

The second half continued to be a battle between the two teams. The game totaled six lead changes and 10 ties. Emory and Henry held a 50-43 lead with under thirteen minutes to go. Bethany continued to battle back to keep the game close. Back to back field goals from Derek White Jr. cut the Wasps lead to two, 58-56. Minutes later, a Neshawn Brown layup brought the Bison within one, 62-61 with five minutes to go in the game.

Battling back and forth, the game knotted at 70-70, the Wasps took the lead with under a minute to go, from a pair of free throws. The Bison answered back from a Hamrick layup. The Green and White defense forced a Wasps turnover, to get the ball back with 0.4 seconds on the clock. Coming out of the timeout, Bethany executed the out of bounds play with a wide open Hamrick who hit the game winning three as time expired.
