Holland Reaches 100 Career Points as Bison Lacrosse Falls to Wilmington

MARCH 12 – WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Bethany College lacrosse team finished a five-game road trip to open the 2016 season, dropping a 14-5 decision to Wilmington College on Saturday afternoon. In the game, junior Jake Holland (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) became the first Bison to reach 100-career points.

The Bison found themselves down 2-0 in the first quarter as the host Quakers tallied the first two scores of the game. The Green & White responded just thirty seconds after Wilmington's second goal, as junior Tyler Peck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) found the back of the net at the 5:17 mark of the frame.

Peck would strike again with 3:48 remaining in the quarter, posting a man-up goal to knot the game at 2-2. The second goal marked Peck's first ever multi-goal game in a Bison uniform.

Wilmington would control the score over the remainder of the first half, including posting one goal in the first quarter and two more in the second. The three-goal swing found Bethany trailing 5-2 at the end of the half.

Wilmington opened the second half in the same way they began the first, posting two quick scores to extend the lead to 7-2.

At the 8:35 mark of the third quarter, Holland scored his first goal of the game, pulling the Bison within four (7-3). The goal gave Holland his 100th-career point as he became the first Bethany player to reach that milestone since the team's reboot in 2011.

Holland, who is currently the all-time career record holder in total points, has now played in 38 games in his career and is averaging 2.6 points per outing.

Attempting to keep the green & White at bay, Wilmington responded with back-to-back goals in the mid stages of the third quarter, extending the advantage to 9-3.

The Quakers would add one more goal before the end of the third quarter, while the Bison responded with a pair of their own.

Lamont Sweeny (Columbia, Md./Reservoir) got into the score book for the first time in 2016, scoring a short-handed goal at the 3:54 mark of the third. He then assisted on a Grant Delaney (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) goal with 42 seconds remaining in the frame, helping cut the deficit to 10-5 by the end of the frame.

The fourth quarter was dominated by the hosts, as Wilmington outscored the Green & White 4-0 in the final frame, to round out the scoring at 14-5.

Offensively, Peck and Sweeny led the way for the Bison, with each totaling two points. Peck notched the first multi-goal game of his Bethany career, while Sweeny finished with a goal and an assist. Holland and Delaney each chipped in with a point.

Defensively, Sean Rhodes (Indiana, Pa./Indiana Area Senior) posted 21 saves between the pipes, marking a season-high for the junior transfer. Junior Dominic Halstead (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) posted a pair of caused turnovers, while sophomore Bryan Uth (Hedgesville, W. Va./Hedgesville) led the Bison with five ground balls.

The Green & White will be back in action on Thursday, March 17, as they open the home portion of their schedule with a Saint Patrick's Day tilt with Otterbein University. The game at Bison Stadium is set for a 7 p.m. start.
