Bison Downed By Marietta in Home Opener

Sept. 7 - BETHANY, W. Va - The Bethany men's soccer team fell in their home opener Wednesday afternoon to Marietta, 3-1

At the 20th minute, Bethany found themselves with an early lead when Pioneer goalie Sebastian Parra put the ball back in play after a save. Not far away from the net, senior Jack Waters (Epsom, United Kingdom/Glyn School) slid and deflected the ball over the keeper's head to net the first goal of the game.

Just three minutes later, Marietta responded with a score by Andy Rolfes on a shot from just inside the 18-yard box.

Bison senior goaltender Callum Appleby (Maidstone, United Kingdom/Maidstone) was strong the rest of the half, totaling five saves for the first 45 minutes. The teams played to a tie at 1-1 at the break.

In the 59th minute, Waters looked to get the lead back for Bethany, but his shot from about 15 yards out sailed just wide, leaving it at 1-1.

Midway through the second half, Marietta broke the tie on rebound shot by Sebastian Ziaja at the 68-minute mark.

The visitors would score another goal with just over three minutes to play, ending the Green and White hopes at tying the match.

Waters led the team with six shots, while sophomore Marlon Mejia (Pugallap, Wash. / Covenant Christian) and Jose Arzate (Waller, Texas / Waller) each tallied two. Appleby recorded nine saves in the loss.

The Bison's record now stands at 0-2-1 as they enter the weekend. They host the Fuzzy Williams Tournament that begins on Saturday at 2:00p.m. with Muskingum playing Franciscan, while the Bison play at 4:00p.m. against Alfred State. All games for the tournament will be played in Bison Stadium.
