Sep. 3 - BALTIMORE, Md. – The Bethany College men's soccer team took advantage of an own goal and then rode a strong performance from senior keeper Callum Appleby (Maidstone, United Kingdom/Maidstone) to come away with a 1-1 draw Saturday against tournament host Johns Hopkins on the first day of the Blue Jay Invitational.
The draw came in the Bison's season opener, while Johns Hopkins now stands at 0-0-2 on the young season.
Although JHU would post a large shot advantage for the match, it was the Bison who struck first. In the 19th minute, BC senior Jack Waters (Epsom, United Kingdon/Glynn School) took a corner and delivered a ball into the box that deflected off a Hopkins defender and into the far side of the net for a 1-0 Bison lead.
Appleby made a pair of saves on eight Blue Jay shots in the opening half, but the host team's attack picked up following intermission. One of the top chances for Hopkins came in the 61st minute when a free kick from over 30 yards out was on target, but Appleby managed to knock it aside and keep the home team off the scoreboard.
The Blue Jays finally managed to break through against the Bison in the 82nd minute, running a set piece off a free kick to net the equalizer. Hopkins had chances to win the match in regulation, but two saves by Appleby with less than two minutes to play kept the score 1-1. That pushed the match to overtime, where neither team could score and this rematch of the 1994 national championship match, won by Bethany in extra time, finished forged in a 1-1 draw.
Appleby was a busy man in net for Bethany, as he turned away nine shots for the match, including seven in the second half, to propel the Green and White to the tie.
Bethany will be back in action Sunday for the second day of the Blue Jay Invitational with a match against Fredonia State (N.Y.) at 1:30 pm.
