Men's soccer drops season opener to Bridgewater, 2-1

BRIDGEWATER, Va. (Aug. 31) - A goal in the 70th-minute was the deciding factor in a 2-1 Bethany loss to Bridgewater (Va.) Friday afternoon in a non-conference match.

THE MATCHUP

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • All three goals in the match were scored in an eight-minute span.
  • With the game scoreless through 62 minutes, Bridgewater notched the game's first marker to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Bethany answered back five minutes later when sophomore Mikel Ubeda (Sopelana, Spain/Azkorri) netted the game-tying goal.
  • Bridgewater reclaimed the lead just three minutes later when an Eagle forward got behind the Bison backline and snuck a ball past sophomore goalkeeper Torben Grether (Rheinfelden, Germany/Georg-Buchner) for the eventual game-winning goal.

MATCH NOTES

  • Grether made four saves in the loss on six shots on goal.
  • Bethany was out-shot 10-to-5 in the game.
