CLERMONT, Fla. (March 14) - The Bethany College softball team had its four-game winning streak snapped and was limited to one run in losses to FDU-Florham and Suffolk Wednesday morning at the PFX Spring Games.

THE MATCHUPS

  • Game 1 Final: FDU-Florham 1, Bethany 0 (Box Score)
  • Game 2 Final: Suffolk 5, Bethany 1 (Box Score)

GAME 1: FDU-Florham 1, Bethany 0

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Bethany finished with eight hits in the game, but were unable to scrape across a run and left 10 runners on base in its 1-0 loss to open the day.
  • Senior pitcher Cassie Weiss (Taylorstown, Pa./McGuffey) retired the first nine batters in-a-row to start the game.
  • FDU-Florham finally broke though with a hit in the fourth inning and advanced the runner to third on a steal and a wild pitch with no outs.
  • Weiss did not allow the runner to score and sat down the next three hitters with a strikeout, infield pop-up and a lineout to the shortstop to keep the game scoreless.
  • The Knights managed to score the game's lone run in the sixth inning with the help of two Bison miscues. The leadoff hitter reached on an error, stole second and scored on a throwing error.
  • Bethany had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when a double by freshman Gabby Capaldi (Steubenville, Ohio/Catholic Central) put runners on second and third with one out.
  • FDU-Florham pitcher Abbey Scarengelli got out of the jam with consecutive infield outs to keep the Bison off of the scoreboard.
  • Weiss retired the Knights in order in the top of the seventh to keep the deficit at one run entering the final frame.
  • Bethany once again put runners at second and third with one out, but a game-ending double play on a line drive to left field dealt the Bison their first loss of the season.

TEAM LEADERS

  • Weiss (2-1) was charged with the loss despite another strong performance. She limited FDU-Florham to one run (unearned) on three hits with 10 strikeouts.
  • Weiss now has 32 strikeouts (10.18 K/7) and sits at 458 for her career. She only needs six more to pass former Bison Racheal Schafer (2000-03) for the all-time Bethany College record of 463 career strikeouts.
  • Folk, Capaldi and senior Ashley Narigon (Washington, Pa./McGuffey) all finished with two hits, apiece.

GAME 2: Suffolk 5, Bethany 1

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Suffolk took advantage of a pair of Bethany errors to claim a 5-1 win in the second game of the day.
  • The Rams manufactured two runs on three hits and a walk in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead.
  • The Bison had runners in scoring position in both the third and fourth innings, but were unable to produce any runs.
  • Suffolk managed to push across two more runs and take a 4-0 in the third inning with the help of a one-out error that extended the inning. The Rams tacked on a fifth run in the fourth inning when the leadoff batter reached on an error and scored on a one-out single.
  • Bethany threatend again in the seventh inning. Sophomore Kaitlyn Mills (New Lexington, Ohio/Crooksville) reached second on an error and came around to score on a RBI groundout by junior Fran Capaldi (Steubenville, Ohio/Catholic Central) to make the score 5-1.
  • The Bison loaded the bases on two singles and an error to put the game-tying run at the plate with two outs, but a fly ball tracked down by the Suffolk second baseman ended the game.

TEAM LEADERS

  • Senior pitcher Sam Binkley (Kenilworth, Ontario/St. James) fell to 2-1 in the circle this season. She yielded five runs (two earned) on 11 hits with six strikeouts in the loss.
  • Bethany was limited to five singles, with Capaldi driving in the team's only run.
