BETHANY, W.Va. (Feb. 1) - The Bethany College women's basketball team was defeated by No. 3 Thomas More 87-47 on Wednesday Night in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup.
The Bison fall to 10-10 overall, 8-5 in the PAC, while Thomas More, ranked No. 3 in the latest Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Top 25 Poll, improves to 20-0 this season, 13-0 in conference play.
Junior forward Kelsea Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier) led Bethany with 18 points and a career-high 18 rebounds, marking her 13th double-double of the season. Sophomore guard Sammie Weiss (Avella, Pa./McGuffey) helped out with 14 points.
Trailing 8-2 in the early minutes of the game, Weiss hit a trey to draw within three, but the Saints pulled away to close out the quarter with a 26-14 lead.
After a basket by the visitors to start the second quarter, the Bison went on a 8-2 run with a pair of treys by Weiss and a jumper by sophomore guard Ashley Duthie (Madison, Ohio/Madison), making the score 33-22. From there, Thomas More would regain a double-digit advantage, heading into the locker room with a 43-28 lead.
The Bison came out of the break trading baskets with the nationally-ranked Saints, pulling back within 10 around the four minute mark of the third quarter, but Thomas More went into the fourth quarter with a 55-42 lead and pulled away in the final period.
Next up, Bethany travels to take on Thiel on Saturday, February 4 with tip-off set for 1 p.m.
