Women's Basketball falls to Pitt-Bradford, 85-82

FROSTBURG, Md. (Nov. 18) - The Bethany College women's basketball team was defeated 85-82 by Pitt-Bradford in the consolation game of the Jim Crawley Tournament hosted by Frostburg State Saturday afternoon.

The Bison open the season at 0-2 overall, while the Panthers improve to 1-1 on the season.

Senior forward Kelsea Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier) registered a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds and was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts. Junior guard Sammie Weiss (Taylorstown, Pa./McGuffey) poured in a career-best 26 points, including 19 in the second half, while freshman guard Allison Kuhn (Lewisville, Ohio/Monroe Central) added seven points and a team-high seven assists in the loss.

Pitt-Bradford opened up a 9-2 advantage over the first three minutes of the game, but the Bison chipped away at the deficit. Bethany went on a 13-3 run, including five points from freshman guard Janaya Hazlip (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto-Rox), to take a 15-12 lead with 2:33 left in the first quarter. The Green & White stayed on-top throughout the remainder of the period and took a 19-16 edge into the second quarter.

Bethany built its biggest lead of the first half when they went ahead 26-19 on a three-pointer by Kuhn at the 6:02 mark of the second quarter. Pitt-Bradford answered with an 18-3 run, including 10-unanswered points, to build a 37-29 lead in the final two minutes of the first half. The Bison managed to close the gap with six-straight points in the final minute and a half to trail 37-35 at halftime.

The third quarter went back-and-forth, with both teams leading by as many as four points on multiple occasions. Weiss finished the frame with 10 points to help Bethany enter the fourth quarter all knotted up at 54-54.

Pitt-Bradford built a 65-60 lead with 7:40 remaining in the game, but 12-straight points by the Bison, capped off with a Weiss three-pointer pushed Bethany to a 72-65 advantage with just under five minutes left in the contest. Pitt-Bradford answered back with a quick 13-2 spurt to reclaim the lead at 78-74, forcing a Bethany timeout with 2:42 to play in the game. The Panthers would not relinquish the lead and connected on five of their six free-throw attempts in the final two minutes to deal the Bison an 85-82 loss.

Bethany will look to get back on track on Tuesday, November 21 when they host Carnegie Mellon for a non-conference game in the home-opener at Hummel Field House at 4 p.m.
