Women's basketball takes down Mount Aloysius, 72-62

CRESSON, Pa. (Dec. 18) - Led by a season-high 32 points from senior forward Kelsea Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier), the Bison knocked off Mount Aloysius 72-62 in a non-conference game Monday night.

The win improves the Bethany College women's basketball team to 3-6 overall, while the Mounties fall to 6-3 on the season.

Daugherty dropped 32 points on 9-of-11 shooting and adding 14-of-18 at the free-throw line with nine rebounds. Junior guard Ashley Duthie (Madison, Ohio/Madison) tallied 14 points with eight rebounds, while freshman Fallon Nicholson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) added 10 points in the win.

Mount Aloysius opened the game with a 7-2 lead over the first three minutes. Bethany answered with a 14-2 run, which included three pointers by Nicholson and freshman Haylie Glass (Mercer, Pa./Mercer), to claim a 16-9 lead with 3:29 remaining in the first quarter. The Bison added to their lead over the final three minutes and took a 24-14 advantage into the second quarter.

Neither team recorded a point over the first three minutes of the second quarter, until a free-throw by Daugherty at the 6:50-mark made the score 25-14. Mount Aloysius broke through with 12-straight points to claim the lead at 26-25 with 3:56 left until halftime. Bethany defensively held the Mounties scoreless until halftime and managed to take a 31-26 edge into the locker rooms.

A Duthie jump shot helped the Bison build their lead to nine, 39-30, four minutes into the second half, before Mount Aloysius rallied for a 11-3 run to slice the Bethany lead to 42-41 with 1:23 left in the third quarter. The Mounties kept the Bison within five points during the next eight minutes and eventually took the lead 59-57 with 4:14 remaining in the contest.

Bethany took command of the game from that point on, with Daugherty scoring 10 of her game-high 32 points over the final four minutes of the game, as the Bison out-scored Mount Aloysius 13-to-5 down the stretch to earn the victory. Bethany was also 9-of-12 as a team at the charity stripe during the closing four minutes to help secure the win.

The Green & White ended the night shooting 23-of-56 from the field and held the Mounties to 20-of-60 (33 percent) for the evening. Bethany also enjoyed a 40-to-28 advantage on the glass.

Mount Aloysius was led by Jessa Wright who tallied 19 points in the loss.

The game was a make-up of a contest that was scheduled to be played last week, but was moved due to travel concerns due to the weather.

Bethany will have a quick turnaround. The Bison travel to Meadville, Pennsylvania tomorrow, December 19 when they take on Allegheny in a non-conference game at 6 p.m.
