Bison defeated at W&J, 77-63

WASHINGTON, Pa. (Feb. 10) - Despite a first half lead, the Bethany College women's basketball team was defeated by Washington & Jefferson 77-63 Saturday afternoon in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game.

The loss drops the Bison to 10-13 overall, 7-9 in the PAC. Meanwhile, the Presidents improve to 20-3 overall, 14-2 in conference play.

Bethany senior forward Kelsea Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier) led the Bison with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds, while junior guard Ashley Duthie (Madison, Ohio/Madison) established a new career-high with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field. Freshman forward Makayla Reynolds (Buckhannon, W.Va./Buckhannon-Upshur) also reached double-figures with 10 points in the loss.

The Bison trailed 9-6 four minutes into the game, before mounting a 14-4 run over the next five minutes to establish a 20-13 lead with 1:25 remaining in the first quarter. Bethany was 6-of-7 from the field and held the Presidents to 1-of-9 over the same stretch.

W&J would comeback with 16-unanswered points to claim the lead at 29-20 with 6:40 left in the first half. The Bison battled back once again by out-scoring the Presidents 18-to-9 over the final six minutes of the half to enter the locker rooms tied at 38-38.  Bethany was efficient in its trips to the charity stripe during the run, knocking down all eight of its attempts.

Bethany hung with W&J during the third quarter and was knocking on the door multiple times in its attempts to take the lead. The Bison trailed by one, 54-53 following a layup by Daugherty with 1:16 remaining in the period, and entered the fourth quarter down four at 57-54.

The Bison were unable to knock down enough shots in the fourth quarter, shooting just 3-of-14 from the field (0-of-5 from three-point), and were out-scored 20-to-10 to allow the Presidents to earn their 20th win of the season.

Bethany returns to the court on Wednesday, February 14 when it hosts Chatham for Senior Day at Hummel Field House at 5:30 p.m.
