Bison Pick Up First Win in Double-OT Against Defiance

Sept. 10 - BETHANY, W. Va. - The Bethany women's soccer team defeated Defiance 1-0 on Saturday in a double overtime thriller.

In the first half, Bethany had plenty of opportunities on the offensive side, but Defiance goalkeeper Madi Bowman had a solid half in not allowing any goals.

Within the first ten minutes, the Bison ripped off three shots, with freshman Kadin Gould's (Huntington, W.Va. / St. Joseph Central Catholic) being the closest before Bowman stepped in front of it.

Throughout the entire first half, the Bethany defense played outstanding, not allowing the Yellow Jackets to get off any shots.

At the 23rd minute, junior Michaela Hinerman (Weirton, W.Va./Brooke) took a shot from the center of the field around the 18-yard box but the save was made.

With just three minutes left, the closest opportunity came for The Green and White when Hinerman was all alone on the right side and went left with her shot but Bowman got a fingertip on it to keep the score knotted at 0-0 at the break.

In the second period, the hosts kept the offensive pressure up but could not net the advantage. The defense allowed eight shots in the second half after not allowing one in the first half, but junior goalkeeper Anna Riddle (Mt. Pleasant, Pa./Mt. Pleasant) tallied six saves before overtime.

Through the first extra period, the momentum was in the hands of the Yellow Jackets, as they outshot the Bison 5-0, however, Defiance could not net a goal.

The tides turned in the second extra session. Bethany regained their offensive pressure and got off five shots in the second overtime period. In the 109th minute, Hinerman received the ball just shy of the 18-yard box, dribbled in front of the goal and scored the winning goal to give the Bison their first win of 2016 and first win for new head coach Jon Arlet.

In the win, Hinerman tallied four shots-on-goal, while Gould recorded three. Along with the solid defensive effort from the Bison, Riddle made nine saves on the afternoon.

The win puts the Bison at 1-3 on the season before they pick things back up on Tuesday when they host La Roche at 4 p.m
