Women's Tennis Drops PAC Bout with Waynesburg

Oct. 6 – BETHANY, W. Va. – Despite a conference-leading eighth win at No. 1 singles by freshman Pia Hager, the Bison women's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to visiting Waynesburg University on Tuesday afternoon at the Mary Ewing Tennis Center.

The Bison found themselves trailing 3-0 after doubles action. Hagger (Stuttgart, Germany) and partner Anna Heizler (Stegen, Germany) posted the top performance in doubles action, falling at No. 1 doubles to Rachel Klemash and Aubree Brown by an 8-6 score.

In singles action, Hager captured her eighth win of the season as she defeated Klemash in straight sets. Hager took the first set by a 6-0 score, before capturing set two, 6-1. With the win, Hager improved to 8-1 on the year, boasting an .889 winning percentage at number one singles. Her overall number of wins currently ranks third in the PAC.

Other top performances in singles play came from Haleigh Brooks (Martinsburg, W. Va./Martinsburg) and Alyssa Smydo (Bentleyville, W. Va./Bentworth). Brooks came just two points away from earning her first win of the season as she fell in three sets to Heidi Evans at No. 6 singles. Brooks took the first set by a 6-3 score before falling in set two, 6-2. She then hung tough in the third set, falling by a 10-8 score. 

At number four singles, Smydo played well in the opening set, falling to Rachel Wilson by a 6-4 tally. She then fell in the second set, 6-0.

The Bison will be back in action on Thursday, October 8 when they travel to Beaver Falls, Pa. to take on Geneva College. The conference matchup is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start.
