LATROBE, Pa. – The Bison opened up conference play against the Saint Vincent Bearcats. After dropping two games this week against tough Ohio Athletic Conference opponents, the Bison bounced back with a win in their first Presidents Athletic Conference game of the season. The Bison won the first game 8-2, but ended up fizzling out in game two.
Grant Schaffner had a massive game one, exploding for five RBI. The left fielder posted two doubles, bringing his total to seven. That is his career best for doubles in a season, beating his previous best with nearly the entire conference schedule yet to play. Schaffner started early with a two RBI single in the first inning. He repeated that same feat later in the sixth inning, driving another two run single to left field. With four RBI under his belt, Schaffner gave his pitcher a little more breathing room with an RBI double down the line.
His final line consisted of four hits, five RBI, a run scored, and two doubles.
The Bison had a successful day on the mound, Trey Mantle pitched a complete game. Mantle only allowed two earned runs through the entire nine innings. While the Bison only struck out one batter, he bailed himself out of a few jams to keep Bethany ahead throughout the entire game. This win boosts Mantle's record to 2-1 on the year.
Mike Hines had an RBI double that pushed in Schaffner. Derek Black earned an RBI on a sacrifice fly.
Game two was less successful for the Bison bats. Sonny Peluchette had the only RBI, going 1-4.
Bethany lost game two 11-3.
Bethany will host Chatham for a PAC doubleheader on Tuesday. Both games will be played at West Liberty. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
