Game Notes: Bethany at Saint Vincent (Week 11)

Andrew Woodley, Sports Information Director

WEEK 11: Bethany College Bison (1-8, 1-6 Presidents' Athletic Conference) at Saint Vincent College Bearcats (2-7, 1-6 Presidents' Athletic Conference)

GAME NOTES (.pdf):

LAST MEETING: The Bison scored 19-unanswered points in the fourth quarter to rally for a 32-31 win and shock the Bearcats in last season's finale. The victory was the second-straight come-from-behind win over the Bearcats, as Bethany scored 21-consecutive points in a 35-27 win in Latrobe to close the 2015 season.

YOU'RE WELCOME MIKE: If both W&J and Case Western Reserve finish 10-0, the Presidents will now win the tiebreaker and earn the PAC's automatic bid into the NCAA Playoffs based on the records of common opponents. Washington and Jefferson played Thomas More, but not Grove City. Case Western Reserve played Grove City, but not Thomas More. The Saints finished 5-3 in conference play. With the loss to Bethany last week, the best the Wolverines can finish is 4-4. That gives the tiebreaker nod and Pool A berth to the Presidents.

ALL THE WRIGHT MOVES: Sophomore running back Raekwon Wright (Baltimore, Md./Patterson) helped fuel Bethany to its first win of the season last week at Grove City. He rushed 14 times for a career-high 158 yards and two touchdowns, including touchdown runs of 46 and 38 yards in the fourth quarter to help seal the victory. Wright, who also serves as the primary return specialist, ranks third in the PAC with 155.6 all-purpose yards this year.

SWARMING LINEBACKERS: Bethany junior linebackers Will Gatling (Baltimore, Md./Northwestern) and Joseph Fiasco (Wilmerding, Pa./Penn-Trafford) are tied for the league-lead with 9.8 tackles per game. Gatling leads the league with 88 total tackles, including a PAC-high 51 solo, to rank 51st in NCAA Division III this season. Fiasco has been named the league's defensive player of the week each of the past two weeks.

PIERCING THROUGH: Bethany senior defensive end Khallid Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio/Ursuline), who ranks second all-time at Bethany with 27.5 career sacks, ranks third in the PAC and 38th in the nation with 8.0 sacks this season and also ranks fourth in the league with 13.5 tackles for loss. As a team, the Bison rank fifth in the PAC with 20 sacks in 2017.

THIRD DOWN WOES: Bethany and Saint Vincent are the two worst teams in the PAC on third down this season. Bethany has converted 30-of-120 attempts (25 percent), while Saint Vincent has moved the chains on only 36-of-124 attempts (29 percent).

TURNOVER MARGIN: Despite its record, the Bison rank fifth in the PAC with a plus-four turnover margin. Bethany leads the conference with 12 fumble recoveries, which ranks 10th in all of NCAA Division III this season. Junior Will Gatling is tied for second in the nation with four recoveries this year.

ALL-TIME RANKS: Senior quarterback Chase Kinemond (Shadyside, Ohio/Shadyside) will conclude his career at Saint Vincent and will leave his name in the career record books at Bethany. Kinemond is currently tied for fifth all-time with 24 touchdown passes and has the fourth-highest completion percentage in school history at 56.4 percent over his three-year career as a Bison.

END OF THE LINE: Bethany will conclude its season at Saint Vincent, as they did not finish with a .500 or better record to qualify for an ECAC postseason bid.
