NEW CONCORD, Ohio (March 29) - The Bison were defeated by Muskingum in a pair of non-conference games Wednesday evening. The Muskies took game one 2-1, before completing the sweep with a 12-4 win (5 innings) in game two.
The Bison fall to 6-12 overall, while the Muskies improve to 8-14 this season.
Game 1: Muskingum 2, Bethany 1
The Bison were three outs from a game one win, but a pair of seventh inning runs by Muskingum dealt Bethany a 2-1 loss.
Neither team pushed any runs across in the first three innings. Freshman Kayla Dinsmore (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) got Bethany on the scoreboard when she connected on her first-career home run in the the fourth inning to give the Bison a 1-0 lead which would stand until the final frame.
Muskingum, which was limited to three hits over the first six innings, connected on four base hits in the final inning to push across two runs and earn the walk-off win.
Junior pitcher Cassie Weiss (Avella, Pa./McGuffey) was tagged with the loss after allowing the two runs in the seventh inning. She held the Muskies to seven hits with eight strikeouts and one walk.
Dinsmore led the team at the plate with two hits, including the solo home run. Freshman Erica Amoroso (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) also finished the game with two hits.
Game 2: Muskingum 12, Bethany 4 (Final/5 Innings)
The Bison were knocked off 12-4 in a run-rule shortened game two.
Muskingum scored three runs in the first inning, but Bethany responded with a three-run second inning to even the game up. Sophomore Emily Folk (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) and junior Jazz Fuqua (Washington, Pa./Trinity) each smacked two-out RBI-doubles, including a two-RBI double from Folk, to tie the game at 3-3.
The Muskies kept the pressure on with three runs in the second, one in the third and five in the fourth to take a 12-3 lead and force the Bison to score two runs to keep the game going.
The Bison scored once in the fifth inning on a RBI-single by freshman Tyra Bell (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), but were unable to push anyone else across resulting in a 12-4 run-rule win for the Muskies.
Bethany is back on the field on Saturday, April 1 when they open Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play against Washington & Jefferson at Bison Field at 1 p.m.
