The Bison Holds Off the Bearcats, 3-2

LATROBE, Pa. (BethanyBison.com) - Despite dropping the first set, the Bethany College volleyball team escaped the Carey Center with 3-2 victory over Saint Vincent College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) tilt, Thursday night, Sept. 27.

THE MATCHUP

• Records: Bethany 11-5, 5-1 PAC | Saint Vincent 7-8, 3-2 PAC

HOW IT HAPPENED

• In the opening set, the Green and White were held to a .214 clip compared to the Bearcats blistering .342 percentage. The Bison raced out to a 7-5 lead over their opponent, but could not maintain it as Saint Vincent took the lead just five points later, which it maintained the remainder of the set for a close, 25-23, win.

• Bethany came out swinging in the second set as a 12-4 run gave it a comfortable lead over Saint Vincent. The Bearcats would be able to get themselves within four, 19-15, but that would be as close as they could get as the Green and White finished the set with a 6-2 run.

• The third round was in favor of Saint Vincent as the Bison hit at a game-low .045 percentage with 10 kills and eight errors. The Bearcats took the lead in the third point and never relinquished it as Bethany was forced to play catch-up for the remainder of the set. A kill from senior Ashely Versyer (Cygnet, Ohio/Elmwood) would get the Green and White within one, 12-11, but Saint Vincent sealed its second win of the night with a 6-0 run.

• Looking to take the game to a fifth, the Bison won the opening point in the fourth and never looked back as their game-high 14 kills provided the Green and White with a 25-22 win.

• In the fifth and final set, Bethany hit a game-high .324 clip to hand the Bearcats their second PAC loss of the season.

MATCH NOTES

• Reigning PAC Player of the Week, junior Katie Sparks (Macedonia, Ohio/Trinity) led the day with a season-high 25 kills and 19 digs for her fourth double-double on the campaign.

• Junior Lindsey Llewellyn (Vermilion, Ohio/Norwalk St. Paul) had a strong showing as the Vermilion, Ohio native tallied 10 kills, the most since racking up 12 against Wooster (9/12), for a hitting percentage of .242.

• Senior Keili Terry (Leesburg, Va./Saint John's) continued to show why she is one of the best servers in the country as she recorded three on the night.

The Bison will return to the court Friday night, Sept. 28, when they take a break from conference play to participate in the Franklin & Marshall Invitational. First serve against host Franklin & Marshall is set for 7 p.m.
