Volleyball Hands Washington and Jefferson a 3-0 Decision

WASHINGTON, Pa. (BethanyBison.com) - For its eighth sweep of the season, the Bethany College volleyball team downed Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe, Washington and Jefferson, 3-0, in a mid-week tilt, Wednesday night, October 3.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both teams were evenly match on the attacking end as neither were able to eclipse the .200 hitting mark. Bethany's game-high percentage came in the first set as it produced 14 kills to Washington & Jefferson's 13 for a .196 clip.

  • In the first set, the Bison raced out to an early 6-0 lead, but the President's were able to get within one following a 9-4 run. The Green and White, however, maintained its lead throughout the opening set, getting ahead as much as four before a W&J attacking error gave Bethany set one, 25-20.

  • In the second frame, Bethany tallied a game-high 17 kills but committed 10 errors for a .152 clip. Neither side was able to maintain much of a lead over each other as the score was tied nine times throughout the set. With the score knotted at 22, a W&J error and a pair of kills by junior Lindsey Llewellyn (Vermilion, Ohio / Norwalk St. Paul) provided Bethany with its second win of the night, 25-23.

  • The Green and White kept the momentum going in the third as it jumped to an early 8-4 lead. Washington and Jefferson would be able to tie the score up, 17-17, but would never snatch the lead from Bethany as the Bison finished the night with a 8-3 run.

MATCH NOTES

  • Producing her seventh double-double on the campaign, junior Katie Sparks (Macedonia, Ohio/Trinity) led the offensive efforts as she recorded 17 of Bethany's 42 kills, while coming up with 13 digs. The Macedonia, Ohio native also tacked on a service error and three block assists to her stat line.

  • Senior Emily Duke (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville) was strong on the serve as she produced a game-high three aces.

  • With freshman Jess Moore (Stewartstown, Pa. / Kennard-Dale) recording Bethany's only solo block of the day, five other Bison recorded a block assist, including a game-high four from the hands of fellow freshman Alexis Swan (New Cumberland, W.Va./Oak Glen).

  • Senior Reilly Parker (North Hungtindon, Pa./Norwin) continues to inch her way closer to the top of the record book as her 25 digs for the night puts her at a total of 2,260 for her career. The senior is currently 53 digs shy from matching Tiffany Hoffman (2008-11), who sits third for her career, while 256 away from the all-time leader, Robin Sayre (1986-89).

The Bison will stay in Bethany this weekend as they host Chatham University and Westminster College in a PAC tri-match, Saturday, Oct. 6. The Green and White will first face off against Chatham at 11 a.m. before going head-to-head with Westminster at 3 p.m.
