Baseball: Bison Split the Day with Thiel

Bethany, W.Va. – Bethany College baseball faced the Thiel College Tomcats to open Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play Friday afternoon.

Game One Overview

Thiel 6, Bethany 5

The Bison scored all five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Kevin Pollock drove in Michael Whiteherse to knot the game at 1-1. Moments later, Grant Shaffner singled driving in Luke Beatty and Pollock. Cory Newman drove in two more runs for the Bison. The Bison led 5-1 after one inning of play. The Tomcats slowly chipped away at the Bison lead and eventually deadlocked the game at 5-5 in the fifth inning. The Tomcats took the final lead in the sixth and held the Bison scoreless for six innings to take game one.

Game Two Overview

Bethany 17, Thiel 7

Thiel struck first in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead. The Bison didn't trail long, scoring four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-1 lead. The Bison added five runs in the bottom of the fourth to lead 9-1. Cameron Schaub his a three-run homerun to extend the Bison lead 9-1. Bethany earned two runs in the fifth. The Tomcats scored two more runs in the six and seventh, cutting the Bison lead to 13-3. Bethany added four runs in the eighth to extend the lead to 17-7.

Bison Leaders

  • Cory Newman and Grant Shaffner led the Bison in game with two runs batted in each.
  • Senior Kevin Pollock had a team-high five RBIs in game two. He totaled six RBIs for the day.
  • Cameron Schaub had three RBIs in game two.
  • Newman and Whiteherse both added two RBIs in the second game.
