Baseball: Bison Spoil Presidents' Perfect PAC Season in Senior Day Split

Washington, Pa. - The Bison served as the home team as they played the Washington and Jefferson Presidents on their field. Bethany's seniors were honored on senior day at Ross Memorial Park due to having their field flooded.

THE BASICS

Final Scores:

Game One: W&J 13, Bethany 6

Game Two: Bethany 11, W&J 6

Records:

  • W&J- (18-9, 11-1 PAC)
  • Bethany- (9-22, 2-12 PAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE)

  • The Presidents' bats have been consistent all season. In game one, W&J put up 15 hits with seven of those being extra bases. That equated to 15 runs scattered throughout innings three through nine.

  • When the Bethany lineup made contact, they tended to get on base. However the Bison struck out 14 times in game one.

  • Bethany made a late push scoring five runs in the final two innings. The top half of the Bison order scored the majority of their runs.

  • Three hits earned RBI honors. Grant Schaffner doubled down the right field line in the third inning. Payton Zupko scored two on a double in the eighth. Josh Speaker sent a ball right back up the middle for an RBI single in the final inning.

BISON LEADERS IN GAME ONE:

  • Nick Roell was 2-4 with two runs and a walk.

  • Speaker had two runs, two hits, and an RBI.

  • Schaffner picked up an extra RBI in the ninth. He improved his line to 2-5 with a double and 2 RBI.

  • Izek Baldwin was 2-4 with a double and a run scored.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME TWO):

  • Logan Bennet earned his first win of the season. He pitched four strikeouts in five and two-thirds.

  • Trey Mantle earned an abnormal save looking at the score. He ended up completing the 3.1 innings after coming in while the game before the Bison offense blew it open.

  • The bats came alive in game two. Each Bison to earn an at-bat reached base safely.

  • W&J looked like they were going to continue the onslaught of scoring in the first. They picked up two before slowing down for a few innings.

  • The Bison manufactured a run in the bottom half of the inning, but the big boost of energy came in the third inning. Speaker tied the game on an RBI double. A few at bats later, Zupko went yard bringing two of his teammates home with him. That gave the Bison a 5-2 lead.

  • Zupko later hit an RBI double to prevent a tied game before the Bison exploded in the eighth.

  • Bethany turned a one run game into a six run game putting a ton of pressure on the Presidents who only had three outs remaining. Highlights from the inning include Riley Brendle's two RBI triple and Derek Black's RBI single up the middle.

  • W&J got one run in the ninth, but it wasn't enough as Bethany stole a win away from the top team in the PAC.

BISON LEADERS IN GAME TWO:

  • Bennett gets the win. Mantle gets the long save.

  • Roell was an impressive 3-4 with three runs and a walk. Two of his hits were doubles.

  • Zupko was 2-4 with a three run home run. He tacked on an extra RBI with a double.

  • Tyler McKee and Black had multi hit days.

  • Brendel was 2-3 with a run and a two RBI triple.
