Bethany welcomes Class of 2022 at Matriculation

BETHANY, W.Va. (Aug. 23) – Bethany College President Tamara Nichols Rodenberg welcomed the incoming freshmen class at Matriculation Convocation Wednesday evening at Commencement Hall. The class includes over 150 student-athletes and over 50 that achieved a high school grade-point average of 3.5 or better.

"Today, the game is on. The goal is set. GRADUATION!" Exclaimed Dr. Rodenberg. "Bethany College will stand beside you throughout your education, help you succeed, both as a student and as a graduate. You will have one of the most connected and meaningful alumni networks this country has to offer. You will have gifted professors, caring staff and diligent administrators who are here because we are dedicated to your success and your graduation!"

The newest Bethanians walked in a processional from the brick road in front of the Benedum Commons, through the historic Oglebay Gates, and up the hill to Commencement Hall. A long-standing Bethany tradition, following Matriculation, the Class of 2022 will not walk through the Oglebay Gates again until graduation.

Dr. Rodenberg's remarks touched on a central theme for the upcoming year.  "ONEBETHANY" charts the course That all Bethanians stand together, united in support of these new Bison as they pursue their future of success.

The convocation concluded with a time-honored ritual as each new student signed the Bethany College Book of Matriculation. The tradition dates back to the late 1800s. The original book was destroyed in a fire, but the custom has continued to be followed 178 years after Alexander Campbell founded the college in 1840.

"Even with all of this support – Hear me now," said Rodenberg. "The College does not choose your future of success – you do."
