Bosley Powers Bethany Softball to Split Against W&J

April 2 – WASHINGTON, Pa. – Behind a seventh-inning grand slam from senior Marissa Bosley (New Martinsville, W. Va./Magnolia), the Bethany College softball team opened conference play with a doubleheader split against Washington & Jefferson on Saturday afternoon.

Bosley capped off a seventh-inning rally in which four Bison (7-13, 1-1 PAC) seniors all scored to take a four-run lead (6-2) over the Presidents (4-10, 1-1 PAC).

Kayla Kelly (Pasadena, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) and Ashlee Brill  (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) both reached base on an error by the Presidents before Deanna Mihalco (Patterson, N.Y./Brewster) walked in order to load the bases. Bosley then drove the first pitch she saw out of the park, collecting her second hit of the contest and four RBIs.

Sophomore Samantha Binkley (Ontario, Canada/St. James) once again turned in a strong performance on the hill, pitching a complete game while giving up no earned runs on four hits. Binkley also struck out seven batters, including four looking.

The Bison took a 2-0 lead after three innings of play as Sarah Coss (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara) earned an RBI after a sacrifice fly in the second and Mihalco had an RBI single in the third.

Binkley began her outing with four scoreless innings before the Presidents managed to score twice to tie the game at 2-2.

Bethany stayed on course, finally breaking the tie on Bosley's homer in the seventh. It was the senior's second home run of the season.

The Bison defense was perfect in the bottom of the final inning, retiring the first three Presidents' hitters they saw. Binkley struck the third batter out to secure the 6-2 victory.

The Green & White totaled nine hits in the contest. Mihalco, Bosley, and Aubrey Baehr (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley) collected two hits, each.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Bison got on the board first in their opening at bats. Kelly led off with a single, scoring on an RBI single from Bosley.

Washington & Jefferson responded in the bottom of the frame, scoring twice to retake the lead.

Cassie Weiss (Washington, Pa./McGuffey) pitched for Bethany as she went six innings and struck out nine.

The Bison offense struggled to find its' rhythm after the opening inning as they recorded just four hits in the game, ultimately falling by a score of 7-1. Mihalco added another base knock while Ashley Narigon (Washington, Pa./McGuffey) doubled for the Green & White.

Bethany College softball will return to action on Tuesday, April 5 as they take on Chatham in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
