Bethany drops contest to Carnegie Mellon, 73-36

BETHANY, W.Va. (Nov. 21) - The Bethany College women's basketball team was dealt a 73-36 by Carnegie Mellon in a non-conference game at the Hummel Field House Tuesday night.

The Bison fall to 0-3 overall, while the Tartans improve to 3-0 this season.

Bethany was led by freshman guard Allison Kuhn (Lewisville, Ohio/Monroe Central) who finished with 10 points and three rebounds, while senior forward Kelsea Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier) added seven points and seven boards in the loss.

Carnegie Mellon opened the game with eight-straight points and eventually built a 15-3 lead with 4:28 remaining in the opening quarter. Bethany came back within nine when junior guard Ashley Duthie (Madison, Ohio/Madison) banked in a jumper at the buzzer to make the score 19-10 to close the first quarter.

The Tartans rebuilt its lead and eventually pulled away for a 37-19 lead at the end of the first half. Carnegie Mellon never allowed Bethany to go on a sustained run and led by more than 20 points for the majority of the second half, before closing out a 73-36 win. 

The Bison finished the afternoon 13-of-54 (24 percent) from the field, including a 2-of-19 (11 percent) showing from long range. Bethany held a 41-to-36 edge on the glass, but were charged with 22 turnovers, which led directly to 22 Tartan points.

Carnegie Mellon's Katharine Higgins finished with a game-high 24 points, while Makayla Filiere added 22 points to lead the Tartans.

Bethany will remain in non-conference play on Sunday, November 26 when they travel to Gambier, Ohio to take on Kenyon at 2 p.m.
