Football: Bethany Suffers Loss to Waynesburg

Waynesburg, Pa. – Bethany College football team fell 31-7 to the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets Saturday afternoon at John F. Wiley Stadium.  

THE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Both teams were held scoreless in the first quarter.
  • The first 14 points scored by Waynesburg came off of Bison turnovers.
  • Waynesburg led 14-0 at halftime.
  • Waynesburg scored in their opening drive in the second half to take a 21-0 lead.
  • Danny Gilbert Jr. had his fourth interception of the year after picking off Waynesburg, but the Bison were unable to convert into points. Waynesburg stopped Colton Stoneman on fourth and one to cause a turnover on downs.
  • The Yellow Jackets led 28-0 through three quarters of play.
  • Bethany scored their first points of the game with 13:30 to go in the fourth quarter from a Marquise Robinson touchdown pass to Chris Williams.
  • Waynesburg put three more points on the board and held Bethany scoreless for the remainder of the game.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Bison had 295 totals yards offense while the Yellow Jackets had 312.
  • The Waynesburg win is the first Yellow Jacket win over the Bison for the first time since 2012.
  • Freshman Elijah Hernandez led the Bison with 30 rushing yards on five attempts.
  • Sophomore Trevon Dean led the Bison with 102 receiving yards on eight receptions.
  • Defensively, Rondell Lewis had 12 tackles (four solo) and one for a loss of eight yards. Brennon Smith added 11 tackles (two solo).
  • Senior free safety Danny Gilbert Jr. had seven tackles (four solo) and one interception and one pass breakup.

Bethany will close out the 2021 regular season when they travel to Latrobe, Pa. to face PAC opponent Saint Vincent College at 1 pm.
