BETHANY, W.Va. (Oct. 4) - A goal in the 38th-minute by freshman Riley Meyers (Dubois, Pa./Dubois Central Catholic) pushed the Bison to a 1-0 win over Thiel Wednesday night at Bison Stadium in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match.
THE MATCHUP
- Final: Bethany 1, Thiel 0 (Box Score)
- Records: Bethany 4-8, 2-0 PAC | Thiel 3-7, 0-1 PAC
- Location: Bison Stadium | Bethany, West Virginia
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Bethany held the upper-hand for the majority of the first half and went on to out-shoot Thiel 11-to-4 in the period.
- The Bison notched the eventual game-winning goal when senior Michaela Hinerman (Weirton, W.Va./Brooke) sent a ball through mid-field to Meyers, who slipped past the Tomcat's backline to setup a breakaway attempt.
- Meyers chipped the ball to the right-side post and past the Thiel goalkeeper for her league-leading seventh goal of the season to propel Bethany to a 1-0 lead.
- Thiel nearly evened the score up less than two minutes later, but a shot attempt caught the crossbar and was sent out of danger by the defense to keep the Bison ahead in the match.
- The Green & White played a much more defensive game in the second half. The Bison closed off the passing lanes for the Tomcats and allowed very few opportunities to score, preserving the 1-0 win and a 2-0 start in league play this season.
MATCH NOTES
- Freshman goalkeeper Maria Concha Vazquez (Queretaro, Mexico/Thomas Jefferson) made a pair of saves to earn her third shutout of the season.
- Bethany held an 11-to-9 edge in shots on goal for the match, but were held without a shot for the entirety of the second half.
- Meyers leads the PAC with seven goals. Three others in the league currently sit at six goals this season.
