Baseball: Bison drop two against Barons

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio - The Bethany College baseball team was swept by Franciscan University Wednesday afternoon. The Bison served as the "home" team despite being on the road after their field suffered damage in a flood two weeks ago.

THE BASICS

Franciscan 4, Bethany 3 (11 innings)

Franciscan 9, Bethany 8

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE)

  • Bethany crossed home plate first in the bottom half of the first inning with a Payton Zupko double that drove in Nick Roell.
  • In the second inning, Franciscan scored two runs to take the lead.
  • Zupko knotted the game at 2-2 with a solo homerun to right field in the bottom of the third and in the seventh, Josh Speaker singled to score Roell to give the Bison a 3-2 lead.
  • Franciscan scored in the top of the ninth to deadlock the game and after two extra innings, the Barons took the lead to win game one.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (GAME ONE)

  • Nick Roell scored twice with three hits.
  • Payton Zupko led the Bison with two RBIs and three hits.
  • Trey Mantle pitched 7.1 innings with five strikeouts and one earned run.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME TWO)

  • Franciscan scored three runs in the third inning to take the lead.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Bethany's Zupko crossed the plate on a Derek Black single.
  • Franciscan added to their lead in the fifth, 5-1.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Bethany cut the deficit, 5-3 after JT Hubert had a sacrifice fly to score Ethan McHugh and Nick Roell drove in Hayden Fox.
  • Trailing 7-3, Josh Speaker cut the deficit with a two-run homerun to left field in the bottom of the seventh.
  • The Barons added to their lead, 9-5, that would end up being just enough to take the win.
  • The Bison battled in the bottom of the ninth, scoring three runs but the Green and White would fall short.
