Women's Basketball: Morey Nominated by PAC for 2023 NCAA Woman of the Year

BETHANY, W.Va. – Joining the historic number of 619 NCAA Woman of the Year nominees, graduate student Sophie Morey from women's basketball was chosen to represent Bethany College and the Presidents' Athletic Conference in the 2023 nominations.

Joining Morey in representing the PAC is Mihaela Toader from Allegheny College.

"Sophie is a great representative of what it means to be a Bethany College student-athlete," says Director of Athletics Brian Sansom. "Sophie made her mark in so many ways during the last four years and has left a lasting impact on the Bethany community through the relationships she has forged."

Since 1991, The NCAA Woman of the Year program has recognized graduating female student-athletes for excellence in academics, athletics, community service, and leadership throughout their college careers.

Morey has represented the women's basketball team since 2019. During her undergrad, she held a 3.96 cumulative GPA while majoring in political science. As a captain of the women's basketball team, Morey is a member of the political science club, is an honors scholar, and made the PAC Academic Honor Roll three times. She was also chosen as a Presidential Fellow for the 2022-23 calendar year, making her one of only four applicants from the U.S. to be selected.

Morey has earned academic recognition each season of play. She was a four-time PAC Academic Honor Roll honoree and earned Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Communicators this past season.

On the court, she has registered two double-doubles this season while averaging a team-high 6.7 rebounds per game. She averaged 4.8 points and 1.3 assists while shooting 43.9 percent from the field. In her final game in Hummel Field House, she pulled down 15 rebounds with 17 points.

The PAC selected two official conference nominees from 11 nominated across the conference. From there, the WOTY committee will choose the Top 30 honorees – 10 from each division. Out of the 30 honorees, the committee will select three finalists from each division which will be announced in Nov.

From those nine finalists, the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will choose the 2023 NCAA Woman of the Year. The honorees will be celebrated at the Woman of the Year Award Ceremony at the NCAA Convention in Phoenix in Jan.
