Bethany College Athletics releases 2023 Hall of Fame Class

BETHANY, W.Va. – Bethany College has announced that it will induct five new members as a part of its 44th Annual Athletic Hall of Fame Class.

The 2023 inductees include Jodi (Bodo) Glover, class of 2010 (Track and Field), Judy Flynn Caves, class of 1982 (Swimming), Matt Cruse, class of 2010 (Football/Track and Field), Jan Forsty, 1987-2018 (Head Softball Coach), and William "Bill" Rainey, class of 1982 (Football).

These new members of the Bethany Athletic Hall of Fame will be inducted at the Hall of Fame dinner on Friday, Nov. 3, and will be also recognized at Bison Stadium the following day during halftime of the football game against Waynesburg.


Jodi (Bodo) Glover, class of 2010 (Steubenville, Ohio), was a member of the track and field team from 2006-10. Bodo's exemplary track career came to a close with six outdoor school records to her credit, including school bests in the 100 (12.92), 200 (25.89), 400 (57.52), 800 (2:20.19), 4x100 relay (50.45) and 4x400 relay (4:00.83). To this day, she still holds three indoor records and two outdoor records. She won two PAC titles, which came in the 800 as a freshman and the 4x400 relay as a junior, was recognized as the PAC Runner of the Week three times and raced to nine All-PAC honors during conference meets. Five of her awards came at the 2010 PAC Championships, where she was Second Team All-PAC in the 200, 400, and both relays and an Honorable Mention selection in the 100. She earned the prestigious athletic department Derrick Hoffman Award and was named Female Athlete of the Year. Bodo is a member of the PAC 60th Anniversary team.

Judy (Flynn) Caves, class of 1982 (Pittsburgh, Pa.), was a member of the swimming and diving team from 1979-1982. She was a three-year captain of the men's team and was selected as the team MVP her senior year. In 1982, she scored 29.5 of the team's total of 113 in the Bobcat Invitational Women's Swim Meet, which was the first time the women competed in a women's only meet. During her time on the men's swimming team, she held six records that have since been broken. Post-graduation, Caves worked as an account executive in Wheeling, W.Va., and as an admissions counselor at Bethany College. She spent time at Carnegie Mellon University as the Associate Director of Admissions. Caves retired in 2022 after spending 15 years as a guidance counselor and swim coach at Seton La Salle Catholic High School in Pittsburgh. Caves enjoys open water swimming pursuits, and volunteers at Animal Shelters and her church.

Matt Cruse, class of 2010 (Naples, Fla.), was a member of the men's track and field and football teams from 2006-10. As Bethany's first-ever two-time All-American, Cruse qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championships on four separate occasions, including qualifying for both the 110 and the 400 hurdles during the spring of 2008. He first earned All-American status in the 55 hurdles during the indoor season in 2007, finishing with a time of 7.60. He followed that performance in the spring of 2008 by earning All-American status in the 110 hurdles by notching a seventh-place mark (14.56). In the prelims of the event, he set the Bethany record, posting a time of 14.49, a school record that still holds today. Along with his Division III Championship honors, Cruse earned All-PAC honors four times and took home the 400 hurdles title as a freshman in 2007 (54.82). He remains one of the top wide receivers in Bethany football history. A four-time all-conference player, Cruse twice earned second-team All-PAC honors. At the culmination of his stellar career, Cruse became Bethany's all-time leader in receptions (177), receiving yards (2,625), and touchdown catches (25). Cruse is a member of the PAC 60th Anniversary track and field and football teams.

Jan Forsty, head softball coach from 1987-2018, was the architect of some of the greatest softball teams to play at Bethany College. She held the mantle of head coach for 31 years. Since arriving on campus in 1987 as the head coach for softball and field hockey teams, Forsty has led the Bison program to unparalleled success with 687 wins during that stretch. She sits 26th all-time in NCAA Division III history with 767 career wins and has led the Bison to a PAC-best 13 conference championships. Forsty elevated the Bison softball program to national prominence when she led the squad to its third-consecutive and fourth overall trip to the NCAA Championships in 2004. Her top year came in 2002 when Bethany compiled a 32-10 record and secured its second-ever bid to the NCAA Tournament and first since 1997. The Bison went on to win the Central Region and earned a trip to the NCAA Division III World Series for the first time in program history. Forsty's team finished the year ranked sixth in the country in the final National Fastpitch Coaches' Association (NFCA) Division III poll. Individually, her players at Bethany have earned All-PAC status 160 times, won PAC Pitcher of the Year honors 13 times, and been named PAC Most Valuable Player on 11 occasions. Forsty's players have also been named all-region 38 times, All-ECAC on nine occasions, and four have earned All-America recognition. In addition to her duties as the head softball coach, Forsty compiled 33 wins as Bethany's head volleyball coach from 2003-06, guided the Bison field hockey team to 11 wins from 1987-89, and coached the women's soccer team to a trio of PAC Championships and 31 victories from 1990-93. Forsty retired as professor and chair of the Physical Education and Sports Studies Department in June 2021.

Bill Rainey, class of 1982 (Willoughby Hills, Ohio), was a member of the football team for four years. During his time in the Bison uniform, he was one of the top running backs in Green and White history. He earned All-PAC Honorable Mention and was a member of the PAC Championship team in 1980. He ranks in the top 10 in the following categories, total touchdowns (20), rushing yards (1,331), and rushing attempts (370). He was a member of Beta Theta Pi Men of Principle. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications from Bethany. After graduation, he traveled to 42 states and several countries. He is currently a project manager in Cleveland, Ohio, at Timco Rubber Products.


Bethany College inducted its first hall of fame class in 1977 and has added a class each year since, with the lone exception occurring in 1986, when no inductions occurred.
