Bethany Athletics Weekly Recap (Oct. 9-15)

Bethany College Athletics Weekly Recap October 9-15

Written by: Zach Pressnell

Bethany Athletics were in full swing during the week of October 9 through October 15. Fall sports are still in the middle of their seasons while Winter sports are quickly approaching. Let's take a look at this past week in Bethany Athletics.

Women's Soccer: Bethany Women's Soccer was shut out in both of their games this week, falling 4-0 and 3-0. They're now 1-6 in conference play.

Men's Soccer: Men's Soccer earned an impressive victory over Grove City. Sebastian Arrocain scored two goals to lead the Bison over the Wolverines 2-0. They also played to a draw with Waynesburg this week.

Women's Volleyball: The reigning PAC champs earned two sweeps this week. They swept W&J on Tuesday and Thiel on Thursday.

Men's Golf: The Men's Golf team finished 12th at the Westminster Fall Invitational. Payton Hildebrand led Bethany, shooting an 83.

Women's Golf: There were no Women's Golf events this week.

Football: Football lost their sixth straight game to begin the 2023 season. They fell to 0-6 after losing 41-7 against Carnegie Mellon.

Cross Country: There were no Cross-Country events this week.

Storylines of the Week

BCVB moves to 3-1 in the PAC, Baseball scrimmages, Football falls to 0-6

BCVB sweeps their third consecutive PAC game, moves to 3-1 in the conference

In the 2022-2023 school year, these women were the only Bethany team to win the PAC. In that PAC championship season, they won 17 of their 30 games. This season has been tremendously more dominant, winning 14 of their first 19 contests, including 11 sweeps.

This week, BCVB added two sweeps to their impressive season, coming against Thiel and Washington and Jefferson. Riley Felton was downright incredible against W&J, totaling 18 points, tied for the fourth most in a single game in her impressive career.

The reigning PAC Player of the Year, Emma Marthins, was impressive against Thiel. She accounted for 14 points in the contest. Asia Crim totaled over 40 digs on the week and Alaina Torres added over 60 assists in the two games.

Bethany Baseball takes on Wheeling University in two Fall scrimmage

The Bethany Baseball team was able to come together for their first annual fall scrimmage against Wheeling University. The two teams matched up for a double header on Friday, playing two seven inning games. Trey Mantle got the start on the mound for the Bison in game one. Mantle, Christian Simmons and Christian Greenauer would combine for 6 innings of two run baseball. The Bison would fall to the Cardinals 4-0 in game one.

For the most part, the story of the day was strong pitching and impressive defense. This team has a ton of veteran production returning in the batting order, which makes it quite exciting to see the pitching and defense come together in action. The hitting will all come together by the time Bethany matches up with another opponent in February.

Football falls to 0-6 with a big loss to Carnegie Mellon

The Tartans' defense proved to be way too much for the Bison to handle as they would gain just 176 yards of total offense. They would score their lone touchdown on the ground when quarterback Miles Goffe ran for a touchdown after replacing Sam after the first couple of drives.

The team will have to continue to push forward through this season as it passes the midway point. They have just four games remaining, with one of them being against top-25 ranked Grove City. The finish to this season could completely dictate the energy and motivation headed into the offseason.
