Bethany College Athletics Weekly Recap (Sept. 11-17)

Bethany College Athletics Weekly Recap (Sept. 11-17)

The week of September 11th saw a few teams with off weeks, while others got out to compete. Bethany Athletics had an exciting group of competitions this week. Here's a quick recap of the week in Bethany's fall sports.

Women's Soccer: Women's Soccer finished the week 1-1-1 with Ally Barclay's goal lifting them over Earlham by a score of 1-0.

Men's Soccer: Bethany Men's Soccer dropped to 1-5-1 on the year with 2 losses and a draw this week.

Women's Volleyball: Bethany Volleyball finished the week 3-1 with wins over Heidelberg, Franklin and Pitt-Greensburg.

Men's Golf: Men's Golf competed in the Grove City Fall Invitational, where freshman Payton Hildebrand finished 12th, the highest finish for a Bison men's golfer in six years.

Women's Golf: The Bethany College Women's Golf team was off this week.

Football: Football fell to Thiel by a score of 22-14, dropping to 0-2 on the season.

Cross Country: The Bethany College Cross Country team was off this week.

Storylines of the Week:

Football falls again, Goodnight shines, BCVB wins the week

Bison Ball falls to Thiel by a score of 22-14

There was some serious excitement surrounding the potential in the Bethany College football program following their week one loss to W&J. The score didn't do true justice for how well QB Kayrus Sam and RB Charlie Mills played, but a week later, the air seems to have been crushed out of the program following a crushing defeat to Thiel.

The game seemingly fell apart in the second quarter, where Bethany missed a 22-yard field goal, turned the ball over and surrendered 15 points. Ultimately, those 15 points would be enough to top the Bison, despite a two-touchdown day from running back Charlie Mills.

Bethany's defense showed some promise though. They held the Tomcats to 2.9 yards per carry on 49 attempts. They also held the Tomcat passing game to under 100 yards. The special team's unit helped the offense when Fabian Hartley blocked a punt leading to the first Bison touchdown.

Destiny Goodnight registers incredible week for Bethany Volleyball

It would be an understatement to say that Destiny Goodnight had a good week for Coach Jordan Barton's squad. In four games during the week, Goodnight registered 47.5 points including 46 kills. She registered 12 kills in the Franklin and Ohio Wesleyan games before exploding for 18 kills in the final matchup of the week, the most in a game by a Bison since 2021 (Jess Moore). She added 11 digs and three assisted blocks spread out through the four games.

Destiny Goodnight may be the X-Factor for BCVB as they get closer to conference play. They have so much talent including a 2023 offensive player of the week (Olivia Koehler) and the reigning PAC Player of the year (Emma Marthins) as well as incredible talent around them, but Goodnight may be the factor that turns a great team into a dominant team.

BCVB goes 3-1 as they inch closer to PAC play

BCVB played 4 games this week, leaving the week with a 3-1 record, including two 3-0 sweeps to begin the week. Sydney Kirker, Olivia Koehler and Emma Marthins all registered 10+ points against Pitt-Greensburg. Destiny Goodnight and Asia Crim led the Bison against Franklin.

Alaina Torres tallied 34 assists and led the Bison with 22 digs in the loss to Ohio Wesleyan. Destiny Goodnight dominated the final game of the week offensively, while Koehler, Crim and Anna Taylor led the Bison defense.

BCVB will play two PAC opponents this week, albeit in nonconference play. They have four more "tune up" games before PAC play begins in a few weeks. Coach Barton looks to guide the Bison back to the PAC playoffs, much like former Coach, Coach Hilyer did last season.
