Bethany College Athletics Weekly Recap (Oct.1-8)

Bethany College Athletics Weekly Recap October 2-8

The week of October 1st kicked off with some excitement around Bethany Athletics. A ton of teams had some exciting weeks. Here's a quick recap of the week in Bethany's fall sports.

Women's Soccer: Women's Soccer grabbed their first conference win, a 5-2 victory over Chatham; Fall to Saint Vincent on Senior Day

Men's Soccer: Men's Soccer dropped both PAC games this week, losing 1-0 in both contests.

Women's Volleyball: BCVB split the week, losing at home to Chatham but sweeping Waynesburg a few days later.

Men's Golf: Peyton Hildebrand and Jude Smith both shot an 88, leading the Bison at the 2023 La Roche Invitational.

Women's Golf: There were no Women's Golf events this week.

Football: Football fell to 0-5, losing 42-7 against Westminster.

Cross Country: Catharina Recabeitia (56th) led the women while Alexander Blair (53rd) led the men at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational.

Storylines of the Week:

BCVB opens PAC play, Football falls to 0-5, Softball Scrimmages

BCVB opens PAC play with a loss, but bounce back nicely to split the week

PAC play kicked off for the reigning PAC volleyball champions this week. They matched up with Chatham at home and for the first time in over two weeks, Bethany women's volleyball lost a set. Not only did they drop a set, but they dropped three, losing the match three sets to one. BCVB hadn't lost a set since September 16th, but PAC rival Chatham was able to defeat them at home. Emma Marthins, Riley Felton and Destiny Goodnight totaled double digit points.

A few days later, Bethany would sweep Waynesburg three to zero, behind great games from Marthins, Felton and Asia Crim. They moved to 1-1 in the conference with eight PAC games remaining. Bethany could find themselves with upwards of seven or eight conference wins if the season goes as planned for this dominant team.

Football drops their fifth straight game to begin the 2023 season

This week's football game was all Westminster from start to finish. They began the game by scoring 42 unanswered points on the Bethany defense. The Titans quarterback threw for four touchdowns while their running back was able to score twice. Westminster sacked the Bethany quarterback twice while Bethany didn't record a sack.

The Bison defense is feeling the loss of Junior defensive lineman, Tsi Fofang. Fofang remains out with a hand injury that he suffered in a game earlier this season. The defensive lineman was on pace to post some incredible numbers for Bethany. The rest of the Bison line hasn't been able to get after the quarterback quite the same since his injury.

At quarterback, Bethany opted to go with Kayrus Sam to begin the game, the same quarterback that has started each of the first five games. After going seven unsuccessful drives with Sam at the helm, backup Miles Goffe was able to put together the lone Bison touchdown drive late in the game.

Softball plays their two fall scrimmages on Sunday

The Softball team got together for their Fall Scrimmages against Potomac State College and Shepherd University. This is the first time the Bison Softball team is getting matched up with another school under their new head coach, Olivia Scarbrough. Scarbrough joins Bethany after a season with Grove City College. Coach Lexi Buck joins the staff as an assistant coach. These two will look to transform the culture in the Bethany Softball program to lead them back to the PAC Playoffs.

Scarbrough was handed the keys to a Bison team with two All-PAC players a year ago, Destiny Goodnight and Morgan Huey. The team also brings back 5th year senior Angela Brandel, senior pitching duo Shelby Barnett and Josie Wise. Ally McClelland rounds out the senior class for the Bison. Sophomore Brooke Markland returns as the team's leader in on-base percentage.
