Bison Women’s Basketball Drops Road Decision to W&J
Jan. 16 – WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Bethany College women's basketball team fell, 77-59, to Washington & Jefferson in Presidents' Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
The Bison (6-9, 4-4 PAC) held on to the lead for much of the first quarter as freshman Ashley Duthie (Madison, Ohio/Madison) and junior Hayley Holenka (Shadyside, Ohio/Shadyside) each scored five early points to take a 20-18 lead.
The Presidents (12-3, 7-1 PAC) retook the lead at the start of the second quarter and went on to outscore Bethany by 12 (21-9) to take a nine-point lead at the half.
Bethany's offense struggled to find its' rhythm out of the break and the Presidents took advantage. The Bison shot just 31.9% from the field in the contest.
Washington & Jefferson continued to take care of the ball and not give in to the stingy Bison defense, turning the ball over just four times in three quarters as they took a 63-45 lead into the final period.
The Green & White failed to cut into the deficit in the fourth, ultimately falling 77-59 to the hosts.
Offensively, Duthie and Holenka led the Bison with 15 and 12 points, respectively. Duthie was efficient throughout the contest, finishing 7-of-11 from the floor for a new career high.
Kelsea Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier) recorded 10 points and eight rebounds, while Gabrielle Naples (Salem, Ohio/South Range) added seven points.
Seniors Mikyla Tipton (Wellsville, Ohio/Wellsville) and Sami Schott (Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah) also pulled down eight boards for the Bison.
Bethany will return to the hardwood on Wednesday, January 20 as they welcome Grove City to the Hummel Field House at 6:00 p.m.
