Women's tennis edges Thiel, 5-4

BETHANY, W.Va. (Oct. 12) - The Bethany College women's tennis team earned a 5-4 win over Thiel in the team's home finale Thursday afternoon in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Bethany earned its second win in PAC play this season, despite falling behind 2-1 after doubles competition.
  • Kristin Schafbuch (Marpingen, Germany/Arnold Janssen) and Alyssa Smydo (Scenery Hill, Pa./Bentworth) notched the lone win in doubles play for the Bison with an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles.
  • Schafbuch and Smydo each claimed their matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.
  • Junior Emily Folk (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) helped the Bison clinch the top-three singles positions with a 6-3, 6-2 win, while a win at No. 6 singles by junior Fran Capaldi (Steubenville, Ohio/Catholic Central) completed the comeback win. Capaldi won her match in straight sets at 6-1, 6-3.
  • The four wins marks the most wins in a single-season by the Bison since 2011 when the team won 12 matches, including five in the PAC.
