Football: Bethany Earns Season Opener Win Against Hiram

BETHANY, W.Va. – The Bethany College football team earned a 26-16 win over Hiram College on Don Ault Field at Bison Stadium to open the 2022 season.

THE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Hiram got on the scoreboard first after Chris Miller made a 20-yard field goal with 9:20 left on the clock in the first quarter.
  • On the next Bethany drive, Marquice Robinson found De'Vaughn McWhorter for a 64-yard touchdown pass to take a 6-3 lead. The Bison held the lead and never looked back.
  • In the second quarter, Tre'Jour Owens broke a few tackles and ran for 30-yards to give the Bison a 12-3 lead.
  • Seven minutes later, the Bison added seven more points after Robinson found an open Chris Williams on a seven-yard pass.
  • In the third quarter the Bison scored their final touchdown of the game after Robinson connected with Trevon Dean for a 24-yard touchdown pass.
  • Hiram attempted to make a comeback in the fourth period after scoring a touchdown and recovering an onside kick to bring the Terriers within ten. The Bison defense was able to make a few big stops to secure the victory.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • (238) – Marquice Robinson threw for 238 yards and three touchdowns. He completed 13 passes on 20 attempts. Robinson rushed for 48 yards.
  • (110) – Tre'Jour Owens rushed for 110 yards on 21 attempts and one touchdown.
  • (114) – De'Vaughn McWhorter had six receptions for 114 yards and one touchdown.
  • (4) – Four different Bison scored
  • (3) – The Bison had three interceptions with two coming from Markel Ross.
  • (12) – Shawn Wheeler led all tacklers with 12 (7 solo) tackles.
  • (2.5) – Tsi Fofang had 2.5 sacks for a loss of 16-yards. He registered 3.5 tackles for loss on a total of seven tackles.

GAME NOTES

  • The win marks the first win in a season opener since the 2016 season.
  • Head Coach Brandon Robinson earned his first career win.

Bethany will travel north to New Wilmington, Pa. for a non-conference contest against Westminster College on Saturday, September 10. Kickoff is set for 1 pm.
