Softball drops doubleheader to Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (April 12) – The Bethany College softball team was dealt a pair of losses by Westminster, falling 3-0 and 2-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action Wednesday evening.

The losses drop the Bison to 12-14 overall, 6-2 in the PAC. Meanwhile, the Titans, who tied for second in the PAC Preseason Poll, improve to 8-0 in league play, 20-6 this season.

GAME 1: Westminster 3, Bethany 0

The Bison were limited to two hits in the team's 3-0 loss in the first game of the day.

Westminster took advantage of an error in the second inning to plate the game's first run and tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the fifth to take the 3-0 lead.

Bethany's best opportunity came in the top of the fifth inning when freshman Kaitlyn Mills (New Lexington, Ohio/Crooksville) reached second base with one out, but the Bison could not advance her along any further.

Junior pitcher Cassie Weiss (Avella, Pa./McGuffey) was tagged with the loss. She held the Titans to three runs (two earned) on five hits with a pair of strikeouts in a complete-game effort. Westminster pitcher Jazmyn Rohrer improved to 11-0 this season after holding the Bison scoreless over seven innings.

GAME 2: Westminster 2, Bethany 1

The Bison offense scored early, but a pair of Westminster runs helped the Titans rally for a 2-1 win in the second game.

Bethany opened the game with a run following an RBI-single by junior Aubrey Baehr (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley) that scored freshman Sammie Weiss (Avella, Pa./McGuffey) from second base to give the Bison a 1-0 lead.

Westminster broke through in the third to tie the game and scored the eventual game-winning run in the fifth with a pair of singles to take a 2-1 lead.

The Bison had the potential game-tying run at second base with two outs in the seventh inning, but could not come up with a base hit, securing the series sweep for the Titans.

Cassie Weiss (8-8) took the loss for Bethany in the circle after allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits with three strikeouts over five innings. Westminster's Kayla Troxil earned the win with five of work and one run allowed, while Rohrer came in for the final two innings to earn a save.

The Bison return home to the friendly confines of Bison Field for a PAC doubleheader against Waynesburg on Saturday, April 15 at 11 a.m.
