SB: O'Farrell's Walk-Off Highlights Sweep
The Bethany College softball team won a pair of games in distinctly different ways Saturday in posting the Presidents' Athletic Conference sweep of Chatham at the Bethany Softball Complex.
GAME ONE: BETHANY 4, CHATHAM 3
Freshman Caitlin O'Farrell smacked a one-out double to plate the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Bethany took the first game of the doubleheader, 4-3.
Katelyn Ziems opened the inning with a single was promptly replaced on the bases by Trista Morris. Following a strikeout, O'Farrell hit the first pitch she saw in right center and Morris rolled all the way home from first.
The walk-off came on the immediate heels of the Cougars knotting the game in the top of the seventh inning.
Bethany took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning as Brooke Markland singlehandedly provided the offense. She drew a one-out walk, stole second, stole third, and came home on a throwing error.
Olivia Kidd's RBI groundout in the bottom of the first inning opened the scoring, but the Cougars got the run back in the top of the second. Both teams scored single runs in the fourth inning.
Josie Wise (10-0) earned the win, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts.
Ziems finished 2-for-3 with a double, while O'Farrell was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
GAME TWO: BETHANY 10, CHATHAM 0 (5 inn.)
Bethany scored in all four innings and recorded the run-ruled, five inning 10-0 victory over Chatham.
Ziems (4-1) was phenomenal in the circle, surrendering just two hits in five scoreless innings.
The Bison scored twice in the first inning, scored four runs in the second, three in the third, and once in the fourth for the run-shortened win.
Destiny Goodnight was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBI, and two stolen bases, while Morgan Huey was 2-for-2 with a double, two runs scored, and three RBI. Bella Jouzapaitis and Kidd each went 2-for-3 for the Bison with Jouzapaitis scoring twice and Kidd registering an RBI.
Bethany finished the game 7-of-7 on stolen bases in the victory.
Bethany (17-1 overall, 4-0 PAC) returns to the diamond 2 p.m. Sunday with a non-conference doubleheader against PSU-Fayette.
