SB: Bison Hit The Mark(land) in Split
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - After nearly getting no-hit in the opener, the Bethany College softball team responded to earn the Presidents' Athletic Conference split Friday.
GAME ONE: WESTMINSTER 3, BETHANY 0
Westminster snapped a scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, all coming with two outs. The Titans finally got to Josie Wise with a single, double, and home run to provide all of the game's offense.
Prior to the inning, Wise had allowed two hits over five innings with seven strikeouts. Wise (11-2) finished the game, yielding three runs on five hits with seven strikeouts.
Junior Brooke Markland had Bethany's lone hit, a triple in the seventh inning. Three other Bison – senior Haley Eyler, freshman Caitlin O'Farrell, and freshman Bella Jouzapaitis – drew walks.
GAME TWO: BETHANY 6, WESTMINSTER 4
Markland snapped a 4-4 tie in the top of the seventh inning with a two-out single, and then scored the insurance run on a senior Haley Eyler double as the Bison came back to secure the split.
Graduate Destiny Goodnight started the rally with a leadoff single and was almost immediately scoring position with a steal of second. After back-to-back outs, the clutch Markland did Markland things and drove home the go-ahead run. Eyler doubled into right field and Markland scampered home from second.
Westminster took the early lead with a pair of runs in the first inning, but the Bison responded with three in the third. Unfortunately, the Titans reclaimed the lead with a pair of runs in the third.
Speed and hustle showed up in the fourth inning for Bethany. Hitting from the right side, Goodnight dribbler up the middle was fielded near second base, but the speedster beat out the throw. Meanwhile, junior Trista Morris never stopped rounding third and scored from second.
Wise (12-2) hurled three innings of hitless, scoreless relief to earn the victory. Senior Katelyn Ziems allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits over four innings.
Goodnight finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Markland was 2-for-3, two runs scored, a double, and three RBI. Eyler had a pair of doubles, and graduate Morgan Huey added a pair of hits.
Bethany (19-3 overall, 6-2 PAC) returns to action 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, hosting Waynesburg in a PAC doubleheader
