Bethany knocked off at Kenyon, 73-59

GAMBIER, Ohio (Nov. 26) - Despite taking a lead into halftime, the Bethany College women's basketball team was dealt a 73-59 loss at Kenyon in non-conference play Sunday afternoon.

The Bison drop to 0-4 overall, while the Ladies improve to 4-1 this season.

Senior forward Kelsea Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier) led Bethany with 20 points and nine rebounds in the loss. Freshmen Fallon Nicholson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) and Haylie Glass (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) each scored in double-figures off of the bench with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Neither team established a multi-possession lead over the first seven minutes of the game. Bethany led 10-9 at the 3:49-mark of the first quarter, before closing the period with a 7-3 spurt to establish a 17-12 lead after one quarter.

Kenyon opened the second quarter with nine-straight points to take a 21-17 lead with 7:06 left in the first half. The Bison answered with a 14-3 run, capped off with a Glass layup with 1:40 remaining in the second quarter, to take a 31-24 lead. Each team traded baskets in the final minute to send Bethany into the locker rooms with a 33-27 lead.

The Ladies opened the second half with a 17-1 run to establish a 44-34 lead with 3:04 left in the third quarter. The Bison managed to bring the game back to within seven points in the final seconds of the period when Daugherty converted a basket-and-one to cut the Kenyon lead to 50-43.

Bethany was within striking distance in the fourth quarter at 56-50 with 6:16 left in the game, but the Bison did not manage to get any closer. Kenyon took a 61-50 lead with under three minutes remaining in the game and closed out the game with a lead of double digits to defeat Bethany.

Kenyon was led by Paige Matijasich, who finished with a game-high 27 points on 10-of-12 from the field. The Ladies as a team shot 27-of-54 (50 percent) compared to the 21-of-59 (36 percent) posted by the Bison.

Bethany returns home on Wednesday, November 29 when they open Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play against Geneva at 5:30 p.m.
