Women's basketball falls at Grove City, 58-51

GROVE CITY, Pa. (Feb. 17) - Despite a season-high 19 points from freshman Haylie Glass (Mercer, Pa./Mercer), the Bison were defeated at Grove City 58-51 in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game Saturday afternoon.

The Bethany College women's basketball team concludes the regular-season at 11-14 overall, 8-9 in conference play. The Bison have clinched the No. 6 seed in the upcoming PAC Tournament and will host Geneva in an opening round game at 6 p.m. on Monday, February 19 at the Hummel Field House. Meanwhile, the Wolverines improve to 17-8 overall, 12-6 in league play.

Glass finished the game with 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting with a team-best six rebounds. Senior Kelsea Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier) and freshman Janaya Hazlip (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto-Rox) each finished with eight points, while Hazlip dished out a season-high 10 assists in the loss.

The game was tied at 9-9 at the five minute-mark of the first quarter, when Glass knocked down consecutive shots to give Bethany a 14-9 lead and force a Grove City timeout. The baskets sparked a 13-to-6 run for the Bison, who entered the second quarter with a 22-15 lead. Grove City rallied to tie the game at 23-23 with 4:48 left until halftime, but the Bison closed the period with nine-unanswered points to take a 32-23 lead into the locker rooms.

The Bison led 39-30 following a three-point shot from Glass with 6:55 left in the third quarter. Grove City answered back with nine-straight points to tie the game at 39-39, before baskets by buckets by junior Ashley Duthie (Madison, Ohio/Madison) and senior Kelsi Settle (Sebring, Ohio/McKinley) to end the quarter with a 43-39 lead.

Grove City rallied to take the lead at the 7:33-mark of the fourth quarter and held onto the advantage for the remainder of the game.

Bethany finished the day shooting 41 percent (18-of-44) and held a 36-to-29 edge in the rebound department. 

The Bison will host Geneva at 6 p.m. on Monday, February 19 in an opening round game of the PAC Tournament.
