Bison defeated by W&J, 59-48

BETHANY, W.Va. (Jan. 10) - Despite a third quarter surge, the Bethany College women's basketball team was dealt a 59-48 loss by Washington & Jefferson Wednesday evening in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest.

The loss drops the Bison to 6-8 overall, 3-4 in the PAC. Meanwhile, the Presidents improve to 7-0 in the league standings, 13-1 overall this season.

Senior forward Kelsea Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier) finished with 15 points and six rebounds in the loss, while freshman guard Janaya Hazlip (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto-Rox) chipped in seven points and three assists.

W&J led 11-8 with 2:11 remaining in the first quarter, but scored five-straight to end the period and take a 16-8 lead into the break.

Bethany hovered around a five point deficit for the first nine minutes of the second quarter, until a three pointer by sophomore guard Payge Farmer (Wellsburg, W.Va./Brooke) pulled the Bison within three at 23-20 with 53 seconds left in the first half. W&J answered with a three on the next possession and would take a 26-21 lead into halftime.

The Green & White had its best stretch in the game out of the halftime break. The Bison opened the second half with a 10-4 run to take a 31-30 lead with 5:09 remaining in the third quarter. 

The Presidents responded with a 10-2 run of their own to reclaim the lead and pull out to a 41-33 advantage with 1:43 to play in the third quarter. Baskets by Daugherty and Hazlip early in the fourth quarter helped the Bison cut the W&J lead to six, 45-39, but Bethany was unable to get any closer. The Presidents made 8-of-10 from the chairty stripe in the fourth quarter to help seal the game away.

Bethany held a slight 30-to-27 edge on the glass, but offensive rebounds were at a premium. Both teams combined for only 12 offensive boards, with the Bison scoring the game's five second chance points.

The Presidents were led by Amirah Moore who tossed in 16 points to lead all scorers.

Bethany is at home on Saturday, January 13 it welcomes Grove City to the Hummel Field House at 1 p.m.
