Baseball: Bison Hang On to Force Split vs Geneva

Beaver Falls, Pa. - Despite traveling quite often, the Bison have not been the designated away team in PAC play since the beginning of April. Bethany traveled to Geneva College for a traditional conference doubleheader where they served as the away team. The Bison reached the 10 win mark in a split against the Golden Tornadoes.

THE BASICS

Final Scores:

Game One: Geneva 8, Bethany 0

Game Two: Bethany 7, Geneva 6

Records:

  • Geneva (15-19, 5-13 PAC)

  • Bethany (10-26, 3-15 PAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE)

  • Bethany was aggressive at the plate. They didn't work a single walk in the nine inning affair.

  • The Bison weren't completely silent as they combined for seven hits- all singles. None of the seven hits were able to drive runners home, even when there were opportunities with RISP.

  • Geneva's Caleb Graft was dialed in, pitching a complete game and striking out nine.

  • The Golden Tornadoes scored eight runs scattered across the first six innings of play. Six of those runs were credited to the Bethany rotation.

BISON LEADERS IN GAME ONE:

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME TWO):

  • The same aggressiveness at the plate was shown on the bases in game two. The Green and White were in the business of manufacturing runs.

  • Bethany's first run of the day came from a Mike Hines single in the second inning.

  • The feast-or-famine swings paid off in the fourth when Payton Zupko cranked a solo home run over the left field fence.

  • Geneva tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, but Bethany regained the lead turning some bruises into runs. After the first two batters were plunked and moved up on a wild pitch, Nick Roell did his job via sacrifice fly. Derek Black followed him up with a single back through the middle to score two runs in the inning.

  • The Bison scored three more runs from stealing bases and setting themselves up for success, including Zupko stealing home in the eighth inning.

  • Geneva was able to score three runs in the bottom of the eighth and ninth, but the Bison were able to hang on by a thread to earn their 10th win of the season.

BISON LEADERS IN GAME TWO:

  • Trey Mantle threw three scoreless innings. He allowed only one hit.

  • Hines had a game going 3-3 with a double, two runs scored, two RBI, and reached base from a HBP.

  • Black also had a three hit game. He was 3-5 with an RBI.

  • Zupko was 2-4 with his solo home run, an extra run scored, and three stolen bases.

  • Roell was 2-4 with an RBI and a stolen base.
