Bison upended at Hiram, 17-5

BETHANY, W.Va. (March 28) - The Bethany College men's lacrosse team was defeated 17-5 by Hiram in a non-conference game Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Hiram scored on the opening possession, but nearly five minutes passed until anyone else found the back of the net.
  • Bethany freshman Nicholas Melita (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) managed to break through the Terrier defense and knotted the game up with 9:38 left in the first quarter.
  • Hiram scored the next five goals to open up a 6-1 lead, before freshman Jacob Ranttila (Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) took a pass from classmate Tristan Shaffer (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) and made the score 6-2 with his third goal of the season.
  • After Bethany entered halftime trailing 8-2, Shaffer notched a goal less than four minutes into the second half to draw the Bison within five.
  • Unfortunatly the Green & White did not get any closer as the Terriers out-scored Bethany 9-to-3 in the final two quarters to claim the win.

MATCH NOTES

  • Bethany senior Sean Rhodes (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) made 18 saves on 30 shots on goal through three quarters. Junior Zac Wyman (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) relived Rhodes in the fourth quarter and made a pair of saves in net.
  • Melita finished the game with two goals, while Shaffer was the top point scorer with a goal and two assists in the loss.
  • The Bison limited Hiram to a 1-of-10 effort in man-up opportunities.
  • Hiram out-shot Bethany 55-to-29 in the match.

  • Bethany will return to Ohio River Lacrosse Conference (ORLC) play on Saturday, March 31 when they travel to Cincinnati, Ohio to take on Mount Saint Joseph.
