Men's lacrosse drops match at Mount Saint Joseph, 9-5

BETHANY, W.Va. (March 31) - The Bethany College men's lacrosse team was dealt a 9-5 loss by Mount Saint Joseph in a Ohio River Athletic Conference (ORLC) game Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After five-scoreless minutes to start the game, the Lions notched a pair of goals to take a 2-0 lead with 7:37 left in the first quarter.
  • Bethany tallied its first goal with just over five minutes to play in the opening period when freshman Nicholas Melita (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) found nylon.
  • MSJ scored the first goal of the second quarter to take a 3-1 lead at the 11:16-mark, but the Bison stormed back to close the first half with the lead.
  • Freshman Hunter Jackson (Towson, Md./Archbishop Curley) scored a man-up goal with 7:50 on the clock. Moments later senior Bryan Uth (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) won the ensuing face-off and ripped another shot past the MSJ goalie to tie the game up at 3-3.
  • The Bison took advantage of another MSJ penalty when freshman Tristan Shaffer (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) netted a man-up goal with 5:31 left in the first half to give Bethany a 4-3 lead.
  • Uth closed out the period with his second goal of the day with just under three minutes to play until halftime to give the Bison a 5-3 lead heading into the break.
  • Mount Saint Joseph took over in the second half, holding the Bison off of the scoreboard in the final 30 minutes.
  • The Lions scored a pair of goals to tie the match at 5-5 with 8:33 to play in the third quarter. MSJ went on to score two more goals in the third quarter to take a 7-5 lead into the final period.
  • Bethany were credited with 11 shots in the fourth quarter, but MSJ kept the Bison off of the scoreboard. The Lions added a pair of insurance goals to push their lead to 9-5, before closing out the win.

MATCH NOTES

  • Bethany senior Sean Rhodes (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) made eight saves on 29 shots on goal in the loss.
  • Uth finished with two goals to lead the Bison offense. He was also 14 of 16 on face-off attempts.
  • Bethany held a 43 to 29 advantage in shots for the match.
