Bethany College Athletics Weekly Recap (Oct. 22-29)

Bethany College Athletics Weekly Recap October 22-29

Written by Zach Pressnell

The week of October 29th saw the end of a few Bethany Fall sport seasons. Football and women's volleyball only have a few weeks remaining as well. But Winter sports are approaching, which leaves us with another exciting few weeks in Bethany Athletics. Let's take a look at this week's events.

Women's Soccer: The women's soccer team finished the season this week, with a final record of 3-10-3

Men's Soccer: The men's soccer team ended their season this week, with a final record of 4-10-3.

Women's Volleyball: BCVB moved their win streak to eight consecutive games with just three matches remaining.

Football: Bethany's football team fell to 0-8 with a lopsided loss to Grove City College.

Cross Country: The Cross-Country teams competed in the PAC Championships this week. The women competed as a team, finishing 11th, while the men competed as individuals.

Swimming and Diving: Bethany's swimming and diving teams traveled to Chatham for a tri-meet against Chatham and Wheeling University.

Storylines of the Week:

BCVB continues rolling, football falls again, BCVB scoreboard watching

BCVB wins their eighth straight game, sit in first place in the PAC

The spectacular women's volleyball team continued to roll over the conference opponents. They added two more PAC victories with a 3-1 win over Allegheny and 3-0 win over Saint Vincent.

Against Grove City, Destiny Goodnight, Sydney Kirker, Olivia Koehler, Riley Felton and Emma Marthins all accounted for ten points. Felton and Marthins also helped to anchor the Bison defense, which recorded 18 blocks as a team.

Later in the week, Bethany swept St. Vincent 3-0. This game was dominated by the reigning PAC player of the year, Emma Marthins. She recorded 13 kills (.526 Kill Percentage) and four solo blocks.

Football falls to 0-8 with a 42-point loss to nationally ranked Grove City

This week, the Bethany football team fell to 0-8. They did so in a game that came against Grove City, who has yet to lose in 2023. Grove City dominated the line of scrimmage the entire game. They ran for nearly 300 yards compared to 50 yards on the ground for Bethany. The Bethany quarterbacks were sacked six times, while the Bison defense didn't record a single sack.

The Bison rank 9th in the PAC in points per game (12.6) and last in the PAC in points allowed per game (39.1). They've allowed over 40 points in five of their eight games, leaving them on the cusp of the first winless season since 1989.

With two games left, both coming against bottom five teams in the PAC (Waynesburg and Saint Vincent), getting a win is a real possibility.

BCVB doesn't control their own destiny, needs a Chatham loss to secure the 1 seed

It's no surprise that the Bethany College Women's Volleyball team has been utterly dominant this season. They currently sit at 19-5 with eight straight wins and an 8-1 record in conference play. This 8-1 record has them sitting in first place of the PAC by half a game. They have one conference game remaining, which could leave them at 9-1 in the conference if they can leave with the victory.

But, as impressive as all this is, BCVB doesn't control their own destiny in terms of becoming regular season PAC Champions. Their one loss, Chatham, also sits with just one conference loss. This means if Chatham is to win out, they'll get the one seed and host the conference tournament. The most likely route to the one seed is as follows:

  • Bethany win over Franciscan AND Chatham loss to Waynesburg or W&J
