Bethany College Athletics Weekly Recap (Oct. 30 - Nov. 5)

Bethany College Athletics Weekly Recap

Written By: Zach Pressnell

The week of November 5th featured some action within Bethany Athletics. Fall sports are nearing an end, with some already wrapping up, while winter sports draw closer and closer. Let's take a look at the most recent week in Bethany Athletics.

Women's Volleyball: BCVB went 1-2 on the week, marking their first losing week since September 9th. They finished the PAC regular season with a 9-1 record, good for the 2 seed in the conference tournament.

Swimming and Diving: The swimming and diving team competed in a Tri match against Emory & Henry and Fairmont State this week. Both the men's and women's teams went 0-2 on the day.

Football: Bethany's football team played a competitive game but fell to 0-9 with a 35-26 loss against Waynesburg.

Storylines of the Week:

BCVB wraps up regular season, football falls in nailbiter, basketball ready to tip off

BCVB finishes the regular season 20-7 as the 2 seed in the PAC

The Bethany College women's volleyball team finished up their 27-game regular season with an impressive 20-7 record. This includes a 9-1 record in PAC play, good for 2nd in the conference. This gives them the opportunity to host a conference tournament game this week.

The Bison were led by a plethora of talent this season. The reigning PAC Player of the Year, Emma Marthins, has put in a tremendous bid to win the award again this season. Marthins ranks first in the PAC in total blocks, fifth in the PAC in hitting %, and eighth in the PAC in points per set.

Complimenting Marthins has been multiple different women. Olivia Koehler leads the Bison in kills (242) after being plagued with an injury a season ago. Destiny Goodnight, Sydney Kirker and Marthins also totaled over 200 kills. Riley Felton finished the regular season with 196 kills. The Bison libero, Asia Crim finished fourth in the conference in digs while graduate student Alaina Torres led the conference in assists per set.

This team is prepped to make a deep PAC tournament run, just like they did a year ago.

Football falls 35-26 to Waynesburg, leaving them on the brink of the first winless season in over 30 years

The Bethany football team received a serious amount of student support this week, as their season winds down. The 0-8 Bison hosted the 1-7 Waynesburg Yellow Jackets in a game that would likely decide who finishes last in the PAC this season.

Bethany was led by an offensive attack that would tally 26 points and over 200 yards on the ground. Charlie Mills and TJ Owensby would spearhead this rushing attack, but this ground game was nothing compared to what the Waynesburg running back would do. The Yellow Jacket running back would carry the ball 41 times for 350 yards and four touchdowns against Bethany. He accounted for four of their five touchdowns and set the rushing record for most yards in a game in Yellow Jacket history.

The Bison would fall 35-26 after losing the lead late in the game. This marks their ninth loss in nine contests this year, with their only hope for a win being in the final game. They will match up with St. Vincent in the final game of the season, where they'll celebrate Senior Day.

Basketball finishes up preseason, ready to tip off this week

The final preseason preparations have been made for the Bethany College basketball teams. They've played their final scrimmages as they now move their sights onto their non-conference opponents this week.

The men's team will be led by the sophomore duo of Cole Dailey and Troy Hixson. It's crucial for this program that these two take on an expanded role on the court in their second seasons. For the women, the return of Lindsey Garrison is the headline to keep an eye on. She's joined by Makenzee Mason, Ashleigh Wheeler and Sophie Morey at the top of this season's team.

Both the men's and women's teams will tip off and open their seasons on Wednesday. The men will travel to Mt. Aloysius while the women will host Penn State Beaver.
