Football: Bethany falls to Carnegie Mellon

BETHANY, W.Va. – The Bethany College football team faced Carnegie Mellon Tartans on Don Ault Field at Bison Stadium for a rainy PAC conference matchup Saturday afternoon. The Tartans used a strong offensive run game and defensive showing to defeat the Bison, 41-7.

THE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Carnegie Mellon took an early 14 point lead, scoring on their first and last drive of the first quarter. The Bison were held scoreless on the opening drive of the game. After driving into Tartans' territory, the Bison attempted to convert on fourth and short and were stopped by the Tartans' defense.  
  • The Bison opened up their drive in the second quarter with a 10-play, 82-yard drive to get on the scoreboard. Freshman quarterback Miles Goffe ran in for a 1-yard touchdown.
  • The Tartans' Justin Caputo connected on a 45-yard field goal to give the Tartans a 17-7 lead.
  • Carnegie Mellon led by ten at the half.
  • In the second half, the Tartans held momentum extending their lead to open the third quarter, 24-7.
  • In the final quarter of play, Carnegie Mellon added 17 points to maintain the commanding lead over the Bison.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • (176) – The Bison were held to 176 yards of total offense, with 151 yards in the air.
  • (6) – Bethany gave the ball away six times, throwing four interceptions and losing two fumbles.
  • (10-18) – The Bison completed 10-of-18 passes; Goffe led the Bison with 9-for-15 with 143 yards passing.

LEADERS

  • De'Vaughn McWhorter led the Bison on the ground with 41 yards on six attempts. McWhorter also led the Bison with three receptions on 56 yards.
  • Miles Goffe had the Bison's only touchdown.
  • Defensively, Rondell Lewis totaled 17 tackles (nine solo) with a 0.5 tackle for loss. Daveon Eason had the Bison's only sack for seven yards.

Bethany returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 21 when they travel to Beaver Falls, Pa for a PAC conference matchup against Geneva College for a 7 pm kickoff.
