Football: Third quarter miscues dooms Bison in loss to Wolverines

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Bethany College football team traveled to No. 21 Grove City College for their final road PAC matchup Saturday afternoon. The Wolverines rolled to a 56-14 win over the Bison. The win gives No. 21 Grove City (9-0) a share of the conference title. 

THE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Bethany went three and out on their first drive with Grove City scoring on their first drive. The Wolverines went 56-yards for six plays earning a 7-0 lead.
  • On Bethany's second drive, the Bison drove down the field for 13 plays and 64-yards. The Bison on the Grove City 11-yard line, went for it on fourth and one but were short of getting the first down.
  • The next Wolverines' drive took two plays for 85-yards to give the Wolverines a 14-0 lead with 3:40 to go in the first.
  • At the end of the first quarter, Wolverines led 14-0.
  • After a Grove City missed field-goal, Bethany drove 80-yards on 10 plays to pull together a touchdown drive. Miles Goffe threw 8-yards to Tre Dean and with the extra-point kick by Jack Sella, the Bison trailed 14-7 with 8:31 to go in the second.
  • With 4:48 in the first half, Grove City took a 21-7 lead over Bethany on a nine play, 47-yard drive.
  • Grove City led 21-7 at halftime.
  • Grove City scored three touchdowns to start third quarter. The Wolverines scored on their first drive of the quarter and forced two consecutive Bison turnovers to extend their lead 42-7.
  • A blocked punt on the next Bison drive would give the Wolverines a 49-7 lead.
  • Grove City scored again in the fourth, taking a 55-7 lead.
  • Bethany found the endzone for the final scoring play of the day with 7:44 to go. Miles Goffe passed to Tim Mickens for a two-yard touchdown.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • (61) – The Bison had 61 total yards of offense in the second half. In the first half, the Bison totaled 186 yards of offense.
  • (196) – Bethany had 196 passing yards.
  • (297) – The Wolverines rushed for 297 yards.
  • (28) – The Wolverines scored 28 points in 3:32 seconds in the third quarter.

LEADERS

  • Quarterback Miles Goffe went 14-for-20 with 143 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Charlie Mills rushed for 56 yards on 13 attempts.
  • Tre Dean finished with five catches for 64 yards and one touchdown.
  • Tim Mickens was on the receiving end of Goffe's second touchdown pass.
  • Defensively, the Bison were led by Kejon Fraley and Cory Ardrey with eight tackles apiece. Sonny Fox had the Bison's lone tackle for loss for two yards.

Bethany returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 4 when they host Waynesburg University for a PAC matchup beginning at 1 pm.
